In a recent turn of events, charges have been dropped against five high school students implicated in a tragic prank that led to the death of a Georgia teacher named Jason Hughes.

Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh announced the decision to NBC News this past Friday, confirming the dismissal of all charges.

Jayden Wallace, an 18-year-old student from North High School, faced initial charges including vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and littering after the ill-fated prank involving toilet paper on March 5.

The other students, all 18 years old—Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz—were initially charged with criminal trespass and littering.

Graham McKinnon, representing the Wallace family, stated that the incident was not a crime but rather “an extremely sad and devastating accident.”

He thanked Laura Hughes, the wife who tragically lost her husband, for her “remarkable compassion and spirit of forgiveness in the face of the tremendous loss of her husband.”

ANF reported on Laura Hughes’ statement, where she asked for charges to be dropped prior to the DA’s decision, saying that she “fully supports getting the charges dropped for all involved,” adding that this was a “terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students.”

“This would be counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.”

As CrimeOnline previously reported, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the teenagers arrived at Hughes’ home on North Gate Drive around 11:40 p.m. to cover the property with toilet paper.

When Hughes came outside, the group attempted to flee in two vehicles.

Investigators said Hughes tripped and fell into the street, where Jayden Ryan Wallace, 18, struck him with a truck, WSB-TV reported.

The teens attempted to provide aid before first responders transported Hughes to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

North Hall High School, Stan Lewis, Director of Communications for Hall County School District, told Atlanta News First that the community will feel this loss “for a very long time” and that “prayers are appreciated from everywhere.”
