PORT ORANGE, Fla. (WFLA)— A police officer in Florida sustained gunshot wounds during a high-speed chase, as reported by the Port Orange Police Department.

Officer Fessenden from the South Daytona Police is currently in stable condition after being shot twice by a suspect on Sunday.

The incident unfolded when officers were called to a shooting on Country Lane. During their investigation, they identified 31-year-old Todd Martin as the suspect. Martin, however, fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting a pursuit by law enforcement.

The chase involved officers from both the Port Orange and South Daytona Police Departments.

The pursuit came to a dramatic end when Martin’s vehicle crashed on Interstate 95. Following the crash, Martin fired at the officers, hitting Officer Fessenden twice.

During the gunfire exchange, Martin was also hit.

“Initial call information did not reveal a connection between the suspected shooter and victim, and no individuals were injured in the initial shooting,” POPD said in a post on Facebook.

Martin also sustained additional severe burns after barricading himself inside a patrol vehicle that had caught on fire.

“We would like to take this time and thank Officer Fessenden for his commitment to our communities and sacrifice made in apprehending an armed and dangerous suspect. We wish him well on his road to recovery,” POPD said in a post on Facebook.
