Meet the man ensuring his family’s lifestyle is truly buoyant.
Parenting a toddler is a challenging endeavor, and doing so while living at sea presents its own set of unique challenges. Ben Featherstone, a staff member with MSC Cruises, shares his experiences of raising his two-year-old daughter aboard a luxury cruise ship, where their daily life is anything but ordinary.
“POV: You’re growing up on a cruise ship, so this is your walk home after a day at the beach,” Featherstone, a 29-year-old singer from London, captioned a video showing his daughter, Piper, happily navigating the elegant corridors of the ship.
Despite the allure of ocean views and exotic destinations, Featherstone admits that life on board isn’t always smooth sailing, even for his young daughter. Along with other parents who have chosen this maritime lifestyle, he acknowledges the challenges, such as limited family time and cramped living quarters.
“As long as you have your own cabin, your immediate family can stay with you on the ship for a maximum of four consecutive weeks,” Featherstone explained in another video, shedding light on the logistical hurdles of raising a family at sea.
His little one, along with wife, Sophie, were able to stay with him during the holidays and Piper’s second birthday, but had to return to the UK after a month, per cruise line rules. Sophie, a working paramedic-in-training, and Piper rejoin him at sea, intermittently.
“They went back to London two days ago,” groaned the performer, who’s made his mark belting out Justin Timberlake hits and swiveling his hips in a “Dirty Dancing” show as a member of the ship’s live entertainment crew since April 2025.
“My cabin is very quiet at the minute. I miss them a lot.”
But, when Sophie and Piper are in tow, the trio is forced live in close quarters.
‘We basically have a double ensuite room with enough floor space to fit a cot bed in for Piper,” Featherstone told DailyMail of their tight, yet livable accommodations. “It’s cozy, but it’s workable! And we don’t mind so much because we’re barely in it.”
Outside of having to squeeze into their cabin, the working dad counts his daughter “lucky” for the privilege of enjoying childhood sans borders.
From attending parties at the boat’s Baby Club to swimming with dolphins in the French Caribbean seas to feeding parrots and cuddling monkeys at a port in St. Maarten, Piper’s got it all.
And life’s a little easier for papa, too, thanks to free meals 24/7 and an on-board nursery.
But Featherstone remembers a wild ride in St. Lucia as his kiddo’s best day abroad.
“These guys come past us with two horses — Piper’s obsessed with animals,” he recalled to People. “So she was like ‘Wow, horsey, horsey,’ and the guy on the horse was like, ‘If you wanna jump on, we’ll take you to the beach.’”
It was a kismet encounter that would not have been afforded to Featherstone’s family if he were working a traditional 9-to-5.
“We were just randomly riding horses down the beach in St. Lucia,’” he laughed. “And [we] were like, ‘God, we definitely wouldn’t be doing this if we were still in London.’”
Sadly, however, as the adage goes, all good things must come to an end.
Online, Featherstone revealed that his contract with the cruise liner ends in March, but says he’s keeping his “fingers crossed” for an equally cushy on-the-go gig because “we just love it.”
“We don’t take it for granted because not everybody on the ship has the same privileges as singers,” he noted.
“I just feel like I’ve lucked out being able to do a job that I love whilst sharing it with my family.”
