TAMPA, Fla. — Rex Culpepper, a former quarterback for both Plant High School and Syracuse University, has passed away at the age of 28.

The cause of his death has yet to be revealed.

On Monday, Culpepper’s fiancée, Savanna Morgan, paid tribute to him in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“It’s unimaginable to meet the love of your life and then lose them after just six short years together,” she shared. “Rex didn’t always believe in soulmates, but towards the end, he told me he hadn’t realized what it felt like to have one until we became extensions of each other.”

Reflecting on their time together, Morgan expressed that she doesn’t “regret a single day” of their shared journey.

“[I’m] sure that myself and all of you who cared about him will never truly be able to move on after knowing someone like him. You [don’t] just meet people like Rex all the time. He was one in a billion. There [wasn’t] one thing that man [couldn’t) do.”

Culpepper, a Tampa native, ranked among the top 10 high school quarterbacks in Florida. He was part of the Syracuse team from 2016 to 2020 and played in 30 games while starting in 2016 as quarterback.

He beat testicular cancer in 2018 after announcing his diagnosis that March. He was the son of former NFL defensive lineman and “Survivor” TV show runner-up Brad Culpepper, who played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for several years.

Eric Dungey, Rex Culpepper’s former Syracuse teammate, took to Instagram to share a photo of him with the caption, “[R.I.P.] Rexy. A guy who had zero fear and truly lived life to the fullest. Thanks for all the memories brother.”
