Gas Prices Surge by 25% in Trump’s Palm Beach County: What’s Fueling the Spike?

Gas prices in Palm Beach County have surged dramatically, increasing by 25% over the past month following President Donald Trump’s announcement of military action against Iran.

Motorists in Trump’s Florida hometown are now facing costs of $4 per gallon at the gas pump. Overnight, prices jumped by 11 cents, according to data from AAA. Compared to last month, before the onset of tensions with Iran, the cost per gallon has risen by a full dollar.

West Palm Beach is experiencing some of the steepest gas prices within the state of Florida, with locals now paying 87 cents more per gallon than they did a month ago.

While Palm Beach County is known for its affluent residents, including many millionaires and billionaires residing in luxurious coastal homes, the rapid increase in fuel costs is hitting the area’s workforce hard, making it difficult for many to manage the sudden financial burden.

This spike in gas prices is not isolated to Palm Beach alone; it’s affecting drivers nationwide. Across the country, the average gas price has climbed to $3.79 per gallon, marking a 30% rise from the previous month’s average.

Fuel prices soared to their highest levels since 2022 last week after Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz to most oil tankers in response to the joint US-Israeli attacks.

Trump on Monday said he has demanded about seven countries send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open as fears of a global energy crisis persist.

But Iranian strikes on commercial ships in and around the strait, and even just the threat of attacks, have slowed shipping there to a trickle.

The surge in oil and gas prices comes after Trump had bragged about gas prices at $2.30 a gallon during his State of the Union address last month.

Since the Iran war started, some 20 vessels in the region have come under attack as Iranian fire effectively halts traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20 percent of all oil and natural gas traded passes.

Trump criticized US allies on Monday for their lukewarm response to his call to help protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz during the war.

He called for more ‘enthusiasm’ from other countries, as he said he believed France and Britain would somewhat reluctantly get involved.

‘We strongly encourage the other nations to get involved with us and get involved quickly and with great enthusiasm,’ Trump told reporters during an event at the White House. ‘The level of enthusiasm matters to me.’

Trump said a number of countries that he did not name had committed to help secure the waterway, a critical choke point for the global oil trade, but lashed out at others who were not ‘enthusiastic.’

‘For 40 years, we’re protecting you, and you don’t want to get involved,’ Trump said.

NATO and other Western allies pushed back earlier Monday on Trump’s demand at the weekend that the alliance help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Since the Iran war caused oil and gasoline prices to spike, Trump’s team has struggled to offer a clear plan for opening up the critical waterway.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Sunday that there are ‘no guarantees’ when prices will fall and warned there will be ‘some elevated pricing’ until the war ends.

‘I can guarantee the situation would be dramatically worse without this military operation to defang the Iranian regime,’ he said on ABC News’ This Week.

Wright added that he hopes prices don’t reach $5 per gallon highs that were recorded under Joe Biden’s Administration, but claimed that if they do ‘at least this increase in gasoline prices is for something that’s going to change the geopolitical situation in the world forever.’

White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told the Daily Mail on Tuesday: ‘Under President Trump’s American energy dominance agenda, oil and gas production has hit record-highs and prices at the pump had dropped to multi-year lows. President Trump has been clear that these are short-term disruptions.

‘Ultimately, once the military objectives are completed and the Iranian terrorist regime is neutralized, oil and gas prices will drop rapidly again, potentially even lower than before the strikes begin. As a result, American families will benefit greatly in the long-term.’

Trump, in recent days, has tried to pivot his messaging from a focus on keeping energy prices low to trying to paint high oil prices as a positive.

‘The United States is the largest Oil Producer in the World, by far, so when oil prices go up, we make a lot of money,’ Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social last Thursday.

‘BUT, of far greater interest and importance to me, as President, is stopping an evil Empire, Iran, from having Nuclear Weapons, and destroying the Middle East and, indeed, the World. I won’t ever let that happen!’

The flip-flop in messaging suggests that Trump’s political interests at home are suddenly at odds with his foreign policy interests.

It also comes at a precarious time for Trump and his Republican party as they gear up for the November midterm elections.

Trump has previously said that high gas prices helped him defeat Biden.

But he said last week that he had no worries about the rising costs that could influence voters this year, and create pressure for him to end the conflict prematurely.
