ORLANDO, Fla. – Nearly a decade after the tragic events at Pulse nightclub, where 49 lives were lost, Orlando is preparing to transform the site into a lasting tribute. The city plans to demolish the building to make room for a permanent memorial.
Last week, city employees took down the club’s sign, marking the beginning of a meticulously planned process aimed at preparing the location for its new purpose. Officials have ensured that all items from within the building have been carefully removed and preserved.
The demolition is slated to commence on Wednesday morning, with crews starting their work at 7 a.m. They will first dampen the structure to minimize dust, with the actual dismantling anticipated to start at 9 a.m. Authorities expect the complete site clearance to span several weeks.
Construction of the permanent memorial is set to kick off this fall, with a projected completion date in 2027. This new space will serve as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and a place for reflection.
The devastating mass shooting at Pulse occurred on June 12, 2016, when a gunman took 49 lives and injured numerous others. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer noted that survivors and the families of the victims have consistently expressed their desire for the site to be transformed into a sanctuary for remembrance and contemplation.
“Certainly the outcry when the not-for-profit was trying to construct it, was talking about building it somewhere other than this site. We learned that it was very, very important that this sacred site, I think we knew that, but it was emphasized that this is a sacred site to those who loved the 49 and anybody else that visited Pulse,” Mayor Dyer said Tuesday.
“This was a location that was not just for the LGBTQ community, it was largly, gay nights and Latin nights and things like that. Just about anyone was welcome, so it meant a lot to a lot of different people.”
Design teams recently showed updated renderings that include a reflecting pool and a fountain wall.
Taking the building down is expected to be an emotional moment for many, Dyer said, the city is offering grief counseling for people who feel they need it.
