Authorities from Melbourne’s Gang Crime Squad are delving into an incident where a man was shot in the city’s south-west area during the night.
According to Victoria Police, the shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. outside a café on Borrack Square in Altona North. They suspect it might be linked to the illicit tobacco market.
A crowd was gathered outside the Café Squared when a white Toyota Hilux approached, and shots were fired into the assembly.
A 49-year-old male sustained two gunshot wounds to the arm and was transported to the hospital, where his injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.
The perpetrators quickly escaped the scene in a vehicle.
Hours later, about 2.50am, the offenders torched the car and left it burning at the intersection of McArthurs and Chambers roads – around 800 metres from where the shooting took place.
Police believe the incident was targeted and said they will investigate any potential links to any other incidents.
A crime scene has been established and the investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing, Victoria Police said.
