Jack Thatcher and his girlfriend, Lorielle Georgina, both 18, embarked on a mountain outing with Georgina’s sister on Sunday, a day that would end in tragedy. The couple, in an unexpected turn of events, plummeted off the rockface.
Georgina fell from a height of 60 meters, succumbing to her injuries at the scene. Thatcher, following a 90-meter fall, was rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in critical condition with severe head trauma. Sadly, it was confirmed tonight that Thatcher did not survive his injuries.
The third teenager, Georgina’s sister, was unharmed physically but endured a harrowing experience, requiring assistance from search and rescue teams. She was found in shock on the mountain.
At the time of the incident, the mountain was officially closed due to heavy rain in the area, with plans to reopen it the following day. This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of outdoor adventures.
The mountain was closed at the time due to heavy rain in the region, and it was supposed to be opened the next day.
Its closure was extended until yesterday following the tragedy.
Senior Sergeant Kylie McLellan said the incident was awful.
“It’s an extraordinarily sad and tragic accident,” he said.
“The falls occurred as a result of some late rain that made the terrain extremely slippery.”
