In a tragic incident in Texas, an 18-year-old high school student was fatally shot in his own home by two teenagers he believed were friends, according to local authorities and the victim’s mother.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced that two 16-year-old boys have been charged with murder in connection with the death of Michael Spivey. The suspects are now in custody at the Harris County juvenile detention center.

The incident occurred on December 26, 2025, the day following Christmas, at Spivey’s residence located on the 17300 block of Edsall Drive in Spring, Texas. Sheriff Gonzalez reported that Spivey had briefly left his home to meet someone outside and returned shortly after with one or two other individuals.

Although authorities have withheld the names of the teenage suspects, Vanessa Garcia, Spivey’s mother, revealed that her son had considered both as friends.

“They reached out to him that night, claiming they needed to charge their phones, and he welcomed them in,” Garcia shared with Houston’s ABC affiliate KTRK. “They exploited my son’s generosity.”

Spivey was shot in the back of the head inside his room, his mother added. There were reportedly no signs of forced entry or struggle in the home, and investigators worked to uncover what they believe happened.

Following the shooting, the two suspects reportedly went online and made “songs” about Spivey, “making fun of him” as if he were “a joke,” Garcia said.

Months later, on Saturday, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged one of the suspects, and on Monday, they arrested and charged the other. Garcia wants them to be prosecuted as adults.

“A juvenile is a child who doesn’t know what they’re doing yet,” she told the local TV station. “They knew what they were doing. They went there with the intent to do it.”
