Mirkovic Shines as Fighting Illini Crush Quakers in Spectacular Victory

GREENVILLE, S.C (WCIA) – The Illinois men’s basketball team has successfully advanced in the NCAA Tournament, securing a victory in their opening round against Penn.

The Illini, seeded third, triumphed over the 14th-seeded Penn with a decisive 105-70 win, propelling them into the tournament’s round of 32.

As they progress, Illinois is set to face off against 11th-seeded VCU on Saturday.

In their NCAA Tournament debuts, Illinois received significant contributions from their standout freshmen right from the start. David Mirkovic made a strong impact with a first-half double-double, tallying 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while Keaton Wagler added seven points before halftime. The Illini led 40-30 as the first half concluded.

During the initial half, Illinois showcased their prowess on the boards, out-rebounding Penn by a significant margin of 28-14.

Illinois kept its foot on the gas to start the second half, opening up a lead larger than 20 in the first seven minutes after the break.

Illinois would go on to lead by as many as 28.

Mirkovic did not slow down after his sensational first half. The Illini freshman forward from Montenegro finished with 27 points and 17 rebounds.

Wagler scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out seven assists.

Saturday’s game between the Illini and the Rams is scheduled to start at 6:50 p.m. CT on CBS/WCIA.
