Hernando Community Unites to Combat Devastating Brush Fire

In Hernando County, Florida, a significant blaze erupted in the Hudson region, prompting both business owners and residents to evacuate the area on Sunday.

According to the Florida Forest Service, as of Monday, efforts to contain the fire have successfully surpassed 90% containment.

Dubbed the “Shoal Line Boulevard Fire” by the Forest Service because of its location, the blaze necessitated evacuations along the eastern side of Shoal Line Boulevard.

Local resident Charlene Dragon witnessed the fire’s rapid expansion firsthand from her neighborhood.

“I could see the flames and every time the wind would come, a tree would go up,” said Dragon, who worried about the wildlife in the area and the firefighters who were trying to put out the flames.

“I’ve seen bear and deer. A friend of mine saw a black panther one time, and just driving down the road and seeing turkey, and just hope they are OK too,” Dragon added.

Yann Milcendeau worried about his business, the Silver Dolphin Restaurant.

He said his son called as the flames approached and it took him nearly 20 minutes to arrive.

“When we got here, we could just see the smoke,” Milcendeau said.

He worked with family members, employees and even a man from the community to put out the fire.

“We pulled all of the hoses that we have, we started spraying the bimini top. The place was filled up with customers. At this point, the customers just wanted to sit there and watch it,” Milcendeau said.

They managed to keep the fire off of their roof and even put out flames in a tree next to their building, but it soon became too dangerous to stay.

“[We] had it somewhat under control, and at that time, we realized that the man who walked in, his back was on fire, and his leg was on fire, but it looked like he had multiple layers of clothing. We put out the fire, my friend sprayed him,” Milcendeau said.

They were soon ordered to leave.

“I had to evacuate my help. They threw us out. They told us to leave, or we were going to die out here,” said Milcendeau who was very thankful to return in the morning and find his restaurant still standing.

He said he’s thankful to everyone who helped and he even opened for business on Monday.
