In Tampa, Florida, the buzz about the Tampa Bay Rays’ ambitious plans for a new stadium has stirred up questions regarding the future of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Tampa Sports Authority (TSA) is keen to understand how the Buccaneers fit into this evolving sporting landscape. The Buccaneers are scheduled to engage in discussions with the TSA, possibly as soon as this week, to explore their future prospects.

The proposed location for the new Rays stadium, positioned near an enhanced Raymond James Stadium, could transform Dale Mabry Highway into a vibrant sports corridor. However, the critical question remains: who will bear the financial burden for these developments?

Within the Hillsborough County Commission, there are ongoing debates about the transparency of the Rays’ stadium deal. This has only heightened the need for clarity on the funding sources and financial commitments involved.

During a recent TSA meeting, member Tony Muiz raised concerns about the potential financial commitment required for Raymond James Stadium. “Do we have any idea, a ballpark range of how much money we’re talking about being able to put into Ray Jay?” he asked, highlighting the need for financial foresight.

TSA President Eric Hart acknowledged the uncertainty, stating, “What that number looks like, I don’t know. But I can imagine it’s not going to be really inexpensive.” He emphasized that, across the nation, arenas are demanding significant investments to stay modern and competitive. Yet, he noted, these venues are not just costly projects; they serve as vital economic engines for their communities.

“It has some similarity, but not the same feeling,” said Tampa City Council Member Charlie Miranda when asked if what he’s heard from the Rays looks like what he experienced with the Bucs.

Miranda is the only current council member to have worked on the deal with the Bucs in the 90s and this current proposal with the Rays. He said with no information on how the Rays will pay their half, and the uncertainty of ad valorem taxes in the city, he’s not confident the deal will benefit taxpayers.

“I’m not against paying something, but I’m not paying for that stadium the public cannot afford to go. The people that are going to pay the tax cannot afford to enter that,” Miranda said.

Whatever the Rays come up with, TSA members believe the Bucs should be considered.

“Any memorandum of understanding doesn’t include what the Bucs want, and what’s going on there really puts us in a pretty difficult decision,” said Luciano Prida, a TSA member.

Some council members said Ray Jay and the baseball stadium are like apples and oranges. Miranda said either way, he’ll be putting taxpayers first.

“I’ve been spanked once. I’m not going to make the same mistake twice,” Miranda said.

The TSA said the Bucs will come with a request to the TSA within 30 days.
