In a tragic turn of events in Fairfax County, Virginia, authorities believe that a former Lieutenant Governor of the state, Justin Fairfax, shot and killed his wife, Cerina Fairfax, on Thursday morning. The grim discovery unfolded after one of their teenage children reportedly made a distress call to 911, according to police reports.

The shooting took place on Guinevere Drive in Annandale, where law enforcement officials found both Justin and Cerina Fairfax dead, each with gunshot wounds. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis shared that the couple’s son and daughter were present in the house during the incident, with the son purportedly being the one to alert authorities.

Details suggest the harrowing sequence of events began in the basement, where Cerina Fairfax was tragically killed. Justin Fairfax was later discovered upstairs in a bedroom, where it appears he turned the gun on himself. Chief Davis noted that the couple was undergoing a tumultuous divorce, which might have played a role in the tragic incident.

The murder of his wife reportedly took place in the basement before Justin Fairfax was found upstairs in a bedroom, appearing to have shot himself. Prior to the shooting, the couple was going through a “messy divorce,” Davis said.

Justin Fairfax was “recently” served court documents regarding an upcoming court appearance.

“That may have been a spark,” Davis said.

Despite divorce proceedings, the couple appeared to live together in separate bedrooms.

In January, Justin Fairfax called the police accusing his wife of assaulting him, Davis said. However, the wife had previously set up cameras throughout the home, and police were able to determine no assault had occurred.

Police believe the cameras remained operational during the shooting.

Justin Fairfax was the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia beginning in January 2018 during former Gov. Ralph Northam’s term. After completing his term, he was practicing law as an attorney before the shooting.
