A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Winter Haven, Florida, as a local woman sustained severe injuries following an attack by a dog she was fostering. The woman, Kimberly Thompson, had taken in a pit bull from the animal rescue group, Rescue Paws, just a day before the unfortunate event.

As shared by both family members and law enforcement, Thompson’s ordeal began on the morning of May 12. Her own family pets suddenly began barking, which in turn agitated the newly fostered pit bull. The commotion startled the dog, leading to a terrifying encounter.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office detailed the incident in their report: “The pit bull began barking and jumped at Kimberly, subsequently attacking her. Kimberly recounted that the dog initially leaped onto her chest before viciously biting her arms, resulting in significant skin tears.”

This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of animals, especially those in unfamiliar environments. As Thompson recovers from her injuries, the community reflects on the delicate balance of fostering and the responsibilities it entails.

Following the attack, Thompson’s daughter and neighbor called 911 for help.

“She really got bit a lot,” Thompson’s child said.

According to the neighbor, Thompson screamed for help and asked for someone to call 911.

Deputies said Thompson needed surgery to repair the wounds on her arms. A GoFundMe for the victim stated the attack damaged the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in both arms, requiring her to be airlifted from Winter Haven to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

Amanda Lippman with Rescue Paws, which is based in Broward County, said Thompson was an experienced animal caregiver and a friend of the rescue.

“At the time of placement, the dog had no known history of aggression,” Lippman said. “The safety of our fosters, adopters, and animals is always our top priority, and the dog has been removed from the household. Rescue work is incredibly important and often complex, and we remain committed to supporting our foster and continuing our mission responsibly.”

As of the latest update, Thompson has been sedated and is in the intensive care unit while she recovers. It is not known whether her arms will be usable after surgery.

The dog attack is still under investigation.
