Revitalize Hip Strength After 60 with These Effective Bed Exercises

Discover the joint-friendly world of bed-based workouts, perfect for those seeking low-impact exercises that eliminate the need for balance.

Maintaining your health and activity levels becomes increasingly vital as you grow older. Among the top priorities should be enhancing hip strength, essential for maintaining mobility, balance, and coordination while minimizing injury risk. To uncover the best strategies for fortifying your hips, we spoke with Karly Mendez, PhD, a Senior Human Performance Specialist at Memorial Hermann Rockets Sports Medicine Institute. She reveals five effective exercises that can be performed comfortably at home on your bed. Integrating these into your fitness routine can accelerate hip strength recovery more effectively than traditional gym workouts after the age of 60.

According to Mendez, “Bed exercises fortify the hips using minimal resistance and offer a supportive surface. Unlike gym equipment, which confines you to set motions, bed workouts engage additional muscle groups alongside core stability.” She elaborates, “These exercises stand apart from gym routines as they lack artificial support, target weaker areas through neuromuscular reactivation, and enable organic movement rather than constrained motion.”

For aging individuals, bed-based workouts are particularly beneficial. They alleviate stress on sore joints, negate the need for balance, and can be easily adapted to suit various fitness levels. Here are six exercises to incorporate into your daily regimen.

Glute Bridges

“Glute bridges target the glutes and lower back, which help with stability and balance (for example, walking),” Mendez shares.

  1. Begin by lying flat on your back with bent knees and feet hip-width apart on the mattress.
  2. Place your arms at your sides with palms facing down.
  3. Press through your heels to lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from head to heels.
  4. Squeeze your buttocks, holding at the top for 2 seconds.
  5. Lower your hips back to the start position.

6 Morning Exercises That Restore Hip Strength Faster Than Floor Stretches After 55

Side-Lying Leg Lifts

“Side-lying leg raises strengthen hip abductors, which in turn, helps keep the pelvis stable when standing or walking,” Mendez explains.

  1. Begin by lying on one side with your legs stacked, your head resting on your bottom arm, and your top hand placed on your hip.
  2. Lift your top leg upward.
  3. Hold it for a moment.
  4. Slowly lower.
  5. Repeat on the other side.

5 Standing Exercises That Restore Hip Strength Faster Than Floor Stretches After 55

Supine Marching

“Supine hip marches mimic walking mechanics and strengthen the hip and the core, which is great for stability,” Mendez says.

  1. Lie flat on your back.
  2. Slowly alternate between lifting each knee up toward your chest like a slow marching motion.

5 Short Workouts That Keep You Stronger Than Most 30-Year-Olds After 50

Clamshell

“Clamshells specifically target the rotators (which helps keep the pelvis stable),” Mendez points out.

  1. Lie on your side with your knees stacked and bent.
  2. Keep your feet together as you lift your top knee, like a clamshell opening.
  3. Lower.
  4. Avoid rotating through your lower back.

“This exercise involves activating the glutes, which are the largest extensor muscles (in the lower body), without utilizing any joints,” Mendez shares.

  1. Begin lying flat on your back with your feet flat on the mattress.
  2. Activate your core.
  3. Squeeze your glutes as tightly as you’re able to, holding the squeeze for a few moments.
  4. Release.
