Newly surfaced images show the rapid growth of a homeless encampment in Seattle, highlighting how conditions at the site have changed dramatically in a little more than a year as Democratic Socialist Katie Wilson has held a prominent leadership role in the city.
Drone footage obtained by KOMO News from June of last year and again earlier this week offers a stark before-and-after look at the expanding South Seattle encampment.
In last year’s aerial images, only a handful of tents could be seen scattered around the location on 42nd Avenue South, a part of the city already struggling with homelessness and public safety concerns.
The latest footage shows a far more crowded scene, with makeshift tarp-covered shelters now surrounded by growing piles of garbage, discarded items and debris.
Among the clutter visible from above were stray dogs, aging RVs, chopped wood, rubber tires and other abandoned materials mixed in with mounds of trash bags spread across the area.
According to the outlet, the encampment site has expanded to both public and private property – sparking concerns from fed up locals.
Neighbor Andrew Rauch told the outlet: ‘It’s a humanitarian crisis of the worst possible measure. The city needs to come in with a hammer and clear these encampments right now.
‘There is going to be tragedy that ensues, whether that’s large-scale or the small tragedies that occur in these encampments day in and out.’

He added: ‘It is just mind boggling the city cannot get control over this. These are folks who don’t want help.
‘They are not going to fall in line to move into any sort of shelter, and certainly not going to be receptive to drug treatment.
‘There are solutions to that, but the city has no teeth in any of its policies’, he said while complaining that he has repeatedly told the city through calls and emails.
Last week, the city’s Unified Care Team finally responded to him, saying they regularly monitor the site and carry out bi-weekly trash cleanups.
The response also said that city teams have conducted ‘outreach efforts’ while they ‘develop a plan with a specified resolution date.’
According to that email, city officials consider the large scale site as actually being a lower priority than other camps in the city despite the abject squalor on display.
The outlet reported that the encampment is proving tricky due to one property owner allowing homeless people to set up shop.
Homeless advocate Christopher Richards told the outlet that the owner is looking into how he can ‘facilitate these people in recovery.’

Richards said: ‘It’s his property; they’re allowed to have tiny homes, things like that while he’s looking into how he can facilitate these people in recovery.
‘They need housing. It’s about to be winter’, adding that the group in the encampment are tight knit.
According to Rauch, the city had opened an encampment village near the area in 2022 which they promised would resolve the problems but it has done the opposite.
He added: ‘If this is the result, I would warn any neighborhood to be super resistant.
‘The level of criminality behind us is off the charts. This is tearing at the fabric of our community.’
In June, Mayor Wilson said she was launching a program of opening up ‘tiny homes’ to stem the tide of homelessness which has long plagued the city.

The mayor previewed 50 of the 1,000 planned single-adult units that the city hopes will serve as transitional housing for those experiencing homelessness.
It was reported at the time that the city will not require those who will be living there to go through addiction or recovery treatment.
‘The process of recovery is really complicated and difficult and so, we’re not demanding that people be abstinent when they enter this village,’ Wilson said.
She admitted that she had failed to meet her goal of building 500 units and having them ready to go in time for Seattle’s turn to host World Cup matches.
‘Is it a failure not to have created 500 units by now? As long as there are thousands of people sleeping unsheltered on our streets, yes, we are failing,’ Wilson said.
