Knife-Wielding Man Jumps on Car and Chases Victim

A man armed with a knife climbed onto a car before pursuing another man through a Canadian street in broad daylight, in a startling confrontation witnesses compared to an “action movie.”

Robin Nuber, from Surrey, was on his way to a photoshoot at Redwood Park on Wednesday when he saw a man sprinting toward his Tesla, with another man chasing close behind while carrying a knife, CBC News reported.

Nuber started filming as the unidentified man grabbed onto the side of the Tesla. He reversed the vehicle in an effort to get away from the violent scene unfolding ahead of him.

A woman could also be seen in the background running after the knife-wielding man, apparently attempting to intervene and bring the confrontation to an end.

“Never felt something like this happen, especially in broad daylight,” Nuber told CityNews Everywhere.

“Even the firefighters and officers agree it was wild. I mean, they all asked to see the video, asking, can we see it again? Because it really does feel like a movie,” he added.

Once he had put enough distance between himself and the knife, the man being chased was able to get inside Nuber’s car. He had suffered several injuries, including a bloodied mouth, a gouged right eye and cuts to his arm.

Police identified the suspected attacker as 37-year-old Richard Evoy. He was taken into custody and charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats.

Evoy, the man he allegedly chased and the woman seen in the video are all known to one another, police said. Investigators did not reveal the nature of their relationship but said the attack is not believed to have been random.

‘Richard Evoy is known to police, previous interactions with police over property related crimes,’ Sgt Lindsey Houghton with the Surrey Police Service said, according to CityNews.

‘Thankfully the quick actions and quick thinking and quite frankly good reversing was able to get the victim to safety before officers got there,’ she added.

The chaos began shortly after 4.40pm on Wednesday, when Nuber, on his way to photograph a family, came across a crashed white pickup truck and Jeep, both with their airbags deployed.

‘I thought that it might be a road rage incident. So, I slowed my car down, and then I took my phone out and started to film what started to happen,’ he told CBC.

Moments later, a chilling warning rang out: ‘He’s got a knife,’ followed by a frantic chase.

‘It felt like I was at an actual movie set, but nope, it was not – it was very real,’ Nuber told the outlet.

In the footage he captured, Evoy is seen climbing out of the top of the pickup truck and peering down at the woman and victim before jumping onto the truck bed, knife in hand and pointed at the fleeing man.

The barefoot victim raced toward Nuber’s Tesla, shouting for help, before grabbing the open rear door and clinging to the side of the moving car.

Nuber threw the Tesla into reverse, creating distance between the victim and Evoy as the alleged attacker continued the chase, trying to catch up with the man desperately hanging onto the car.

‘The guy basically ended up hanging onto my car and then being kind of dangled underneath the door for about 100 feet. I think I dragged him just to get him away from the guy,’ he told the outlet.

At one point in the video, Nuber can be heard telling the victim to ‘hold on’ before bringing the car to a stop.

‘Eventually he kind of begged me to stop the car so he could get inside because he was obviously getting road rash,’ he said.

The man finally abandoned the pursuit.

‘We kept going because he kept coming at us, and then he lost steam and gave up,’ Nuber told CityNews. ‘At that point we pulled over and we saw him toss the knife in the woods.’

Minutes later, police arrived and took Evoy into custody without incident, according to the outlet.

‘The victim attempted to drive away in his Ford pickup truck when the suspect drove his Jeep Wrangler into it,’ police said in a statement on Thursday.

The chase finally came to an end when the man gave up and, according to Nuber, threw his knife into the woods

‘The victim then ran from the truck as the suspect allegedly brandished a knife and chased after him,’ they added. ‘Fortunately, a nearby witness driving a Tesla provided the victim safety until SPS officers arrived.’

Evoy remains in custody and is expected to appear in Surrey Provincial Court on Thursday, when a date for his next appearance is expected to be set.

As for Nuber, he said the sudden ordeal was a true test of his survival instincts, telling CBC: ‘I think if you ever face a situation, you might be impressed with yourself, with what your instincts do.’

Remarkably, Nuber still made it to the family photoshoot he had been scheduled to work, according to CityNews.

‘I had to tell them a few times, I might be a few more minutes, but they were able to scout out some cute spots in the park for family photos at the park, very wholesome,’ he told the outlet.
