80-Year-Old Man Allegedly Lured From Truck by 3 Teens During Quick Dinner Stop, Suffers Brain Bleeds

Three people convicted in a carjacking that left an 80-year-old Texas man dead will spend years in prison, authorities in Bexar County announced.

Miguel Acosta, 20, received a 10-year prison sentence this week after pleading guilty to aggravated robbery earlier this year, according to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.

Zachariah Aguirre, Acosta’s co-defendant, was sentenced to 25 years for the murder of 80-year-old Larry Brister. Gabriel Urbano, the third defendant, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and received a 20-year sentence. Both Aguirre and Urbano are 19.

Brister was making what authorities described as a “quick dinner run” near Stonewood Drive in San Antonio on Feb. 11, 2023, when Aguirre approached him, the DA’s office said.

Aguirre, who was 15 at the time, allegedly “tricked Brister into getting out of his truck to inspect his tire.” Once Brister stepped outside, authorities said, Aguirre climbed into the driver’s seat and drove off, knowingly dragging Brister as the older man attempted to stop the theft.

The district attorney’s office called Brister’s injuries “severe.” His daughter later provided a detailed account of the trauma he suffered.

“He has brain bleeds, broken nose, a broken shoulder, broken ribs, collapsed lung, his leg is raw from the knee down, his fibula is broken,” Paige Roy told regional NBC affiliate WOAI. “Who does that to an 80 year old man? If you need the vehicle, to take the vehicle is one thing, but the brutal hateness, I can’t wrap my head around this.”

Brister was taken to a local hospital, where he battled for his life for nearly five months before dying from his injuries, prosecutors said. The three defendants were initially arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. After Brister’s death, prosecutors upgraded the charges to murder.

Urbano was also reportedly charged in connection with a separate aggravated robbery.

With Acosta’s sentencing this week, all three defendants have now received prison terms. Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales highlighted Acosta’s case because he was the last of the trio to be sentenced.

“Today’s sentence holds Miguel Acosta accountable for his role in a violent crime that forever changed the lives of Larry Brister and his family,” Gonzales said. “While no sentence can undo the harm experienced or the loss suffered by Mr. Brister’s loved ones, accountability matters. Our office will continue to stand with victims and their families and work to ensure those responsible for violent crimes are held accountable for their actions.”
