Lane Kiffin’s highly anticipated return to Ole Miss ended in disappointment Saturday night, as his former quarterback, Trinidad Chambliss, delivered a standout performance to lead the Rebels past Kiffin’s LSU Tigers.
Kiffin returned to Oxford, Mississippi, for the first time since his abrupt departure from Ole Miss in November, shortly before the previous season’s College Football Playoff. The reception was hostile from the outset, with fans unleashing a steady stream of boos and repeated “F*** Lane Kiffin” chants throughout the night.
Chambliss, whom Kiffin helped develop into a star after recruiting him from a Division II program to Mississippi last year, threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns before adding the go-ahead rushing score in the fourth quarter.
LSU erased a 24-7 halftime deficit and pulled level, but Chambliss then directed a 75-yard touchdown drive despite the absence of leading running back Kewan Lacy, who exited with a left shoulder injury.
On the decisive play, Chambliss sold a handoff, cut against the grain and sprinted 14 yards to the pylon, beating LSU safety Ty Benefield. Ole Miss followed with a successful two-point conversion to move eight points ahead with 6:14 remaining.
LSU responded with a 69-yard march to the Ole Miss 6-yard line. Sam Leavitt missed a wide-open tight end, Zach Grace, on a third-down throw near the goal line, then saw his fourth-down attempt glance off the helmet of defensive end Kam Franklin. Jaylon Braxton intercepted the deflection in the end zone to secure the victory.

Kiffin, accompanied by several police officers, stepped off the LSU bus roughly 90 minutes before kickoff and was immediately met by boos and jeers from thousands of Ole Miss supporters.
He remained composed and waved toward the crowd, while a small contingent of traveling LSU fans offered cheers that were nearly drowned out by the hostility directed at Kiffin.
The Tigers entered the stadium without incident. Ole Miss had taken the unusual precaution of installing tall chain-link fences covered in blue fabric to block the crowd’s view.
Even so, some fans waited for a glimpse of the tops of LSU’s buses before shouting insults, including obscenities, as the team made the short journey to the visiting locker room.
The noise intensified when Kiffin and his LSU players came onto the field for warmups. His running backs coach, Kevin Smith, was filmed exchanging words with Ole Miss supporters in the stands wearing red and blue.
Videos also showed Ole Miss fans verbally confronting LSU players as they arrived at the stadium and moved around the field.
Following the defeat, an emotional Kiffin reflected on his six years in Oxford. “A lot of emotions of gratefulness for this place and the six years went well beyond football… it was a lot, it was really emotional,” he said. “But it was not emotions maybe that I thought I would’ve felt from all the name calling… a lot of gratitude for this place and the people that changed my life way bigger than winning a football game.”
Kiffin continued: “It was just a lot, coming in… Six years here and a lot of things, a lot of life-changing experiences and a lot of really good people that helped me through some really hard times… sometimes you can’t predict your emotions. I know sometimes I don’t act like it, but I’m a human too.”

Several LSU dignitaries watched from the sideline during warmups, including Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill.
Kiffin’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, was on the field speaking with LSU president Wade Rousse when a practice punt took an odd bounce and struck Rousse in the side of the head.
Mississippi state officials assembled the state’s largest law enforcement presence ever for a college football game in Oxford, a town of about 26,000 permanent residents’.
Authorities expected around 100,000 people to converge – many of them without tickets for 64,000-seat Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Just in case there were any lingering doubts where Kiffin now stands with Ole Miss fans, the Rebel faithful made their feelings crystal clear during Saturday’s live broadcast of ESPN’s College GameDay.
Speaking via satellite from the team’s hotel in Oxford, Kiffin’s face was projected onto a large screen overlooking the throngs of students and Rebels fans. Almost immediately, chants of ‘a**hole’ began to ring out from the group.
‘I really appreciate you guys gaslighting them with this,’ Kiffin told the ESPN panel.
And as if that weren’t enough, fans naturally brought some derisive signs to the College GameDay broadcast.
‘I’m 10 and I make better decisions than Lane,’ read a sign held by one young Ole Miss fan.
One young woman brought a sign humorously suggesting she and Kiffin previously dated: ‘Why is my ex here?’
Kiffin did try to defuse the tension at a few moments, once telling the panel: ‘It’s not about me. Both teams have great players, great coaches, [I] have a lot of respect for their program.’
Meanwhile, chants of ‘a**hole’ continued to rage in the background.

Tensions between the two storied SEC schools ramped up when Kiffin left the Rebels to take the LSU job and a $91 million contract just as the team he had coached for six years was days away from its first appearance in the CFP.
Kiffin wanted to stay through the playoff, but Ole Miss moved on to coach Pete Golding and advanced to the CFP semifinals. LSU finished 7-6, capped by a loss in the Texas Bowl.
The off-field storylines haven’t stopped since. Kiffin’s comments about whether Black players could be recruited to Ole Miss, lawsuits alleging Ole Miss transfers owe big money for reneging on their NIL deals and LSU’s now-abandoned defiance of rules against rostering former pro players only brightened the spotlight on this game.
LSU threw another wrinkle into the mix by saying midweek that quarterback Leavitt was ‘doubtful’ to play, sparking immediate fan accusations of gamesmanship. He played throughout the game.

Landry, 21, is still an Ole Miss student after her father’s notorious defection. However, she is now finishing her degree remotely from Baton Rouge.
She has also been dating LSU’s star linebacker Whit Weeks since last year and made no effort to hide who she was cheering for during the big game in Oxford, Mississippi.
Landry posted several TikToks of herself getting ready for the big night and eventually her look consisted of a bright yellow Prada dress.
She posed for a selfie on the field before kickoff, where she watched warm ups, and captioned the post ‘LFG’ before heading up to her suite to watch the game.

It came after banners linking Landry sexually with a former Rebels player allegedly surfaced in and around the Oxford campus this week.
Ahead of the game, Landry pleaded with Rebels fans to stop hanging sexually inappropriate banners aimed at mocking her and her family.
‘I normally don’t respond to any hateful posts around game days, but this one actually hurts,’ Landry, who has her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, said on TikTok. ‘I’m still a student at Ole Miss. I’ve loved my time here, and I love Ole Miss, so that’s what kind of makes this all even more upsetting.
‘I opened my phone this morning to pictures of banners on houses around Oxford posted on different accounts, saying really inappropriate things about me and with somebody that I genuinely have never met in my life, which makes it even more frustrating to say the least,’ she continued.
‘I think that turning a girl into the punchline of a sexual joke because you’re upset at somebody she’s related to should not be okay. I understand emotions are high this week and people are upset, but I’m my own person.
‘I will just never understand how someone can feel good about themselves putting such vulgar things about a girl on a giant banner hanging from their house. I feel like that’s really mind blowing to me. I just hope people realize that there’s like an actual person behind the jokes that they make, but I don’t know.’
