Police Officer and Woman Shot Near Notre Dame After Football Tailgates

A single gunshot fired during a post-tailgate confrontation near Notre Dame’s South Bend, Indiana, campus injured a woman and a police officer Saturday night, authorities said.

The disturbance began at about 7:30 p.m. ET as tailgating crowds left the university area and moved toward Eddy Street Commons. South Bend authorities said Notre Dame police reported seeing an armed man allegedly pointing a gun at people. However, when South Bend officers located a person matching that description, he was not carrying a weapon.

“As approximately 20 South Bend Police Officers were working in Eddy Street Commons and responding to that call, a single gunshot was heard near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard,” the South Bend Police Department said in a Facebook post.

Officers then discovered a woman who had suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her leg. A South Bend police officer was also hurt, apparently by a ricochet or shrapnel, according to the department.

Both victims were taken to a nearby hospital and are expected to recover fully. Police said the officer was “doing fine,” while the woman was also reported to be “okay.”

Notre Dame officials said the suspected shooter ran west from the scene, NBC 5 Chicago reported. The suspect was still at large and was described by the local report as a heavyset Black man with dreadlocks. He was reportedly wearing blue shorts and a black shirt featuring a red-and-blue design, and was missing one shoe.
