Hurricane Polo Drenches Mexico’s Coast Offshore as Tropical Storm Nolo Nears Hawaii

MEXICO CITY — People along Mexico’s Pacific coast filled sandbags around beachfront businesses and fled vulnerable homes Thursday as Hurricane Polo threatened Mexico, while Hawaii’s Big Island and Maui prepared for potentially catastrophic flooding from a separate Pacific storm.

Nolo strengthened into a hurricane Thursday night and was forecast to intensify as it approached Hawaii’s Big Island, the National Hurricane Center reported. Forecasters warned that the island could receive 15 to 30 inches (38 to 76 centimeters) of rain, with isolated higher totals possible through Saturday. Maui also faced the risk of life-threatening flooding.
