Smith was born in southern New Jersey. Her family later relocated to upstate New York before ultimately settling in Dayton, Ohio, where she has spent most of her life.
Following college, Smith worked as a 911 dispatcher for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department and initially planned to pursue a career as a police officer. Her professional interests, however, shifted toward the legal system. She moved into legal support roles, first as a legal secretary, then as an in-court assistant and later as a paralegal focused on criminal and family law.
