Vape Shop Clerks Near Ole Miss Campus Jailed on Drug Charges

Two clerks at Oxford, Mississippi, vape stores are facing federal drug charges after investigators traced purchases allegedly made by two University of Mississippi students before their deaths, according to court documents.

Yahya Mohamed Mosleh and Islam Yahya Mosleh are each charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, the documents state.

A DEA affidavit says bank records connected Aidan Hamilton to purchases at Puffs Vape Tobacco & Beer and Robert Strang to Express Mart #7. Investigators later found similar suspected kratom products at both death scenes. Authorities also cited undercover purchases and the seizure of more than 500 suspected kratom-related products from the Oxford vape shop.

The affidavit, dated Sept. 25, said investigators were still waiting for toxicology results from the medical examiner.

The charges were filed as officials awaited toxicology results in the deaths of Ole Miss students Aidan Hamilton, 18, and Robert Strang, 20. Court documents say both were found dead with similar packages of synthetic kratom in their possession. The Moslehs have not been accused in either death.

The products found near the two men were labeled “Smax, Pseudo-DHM” tablets. Court documents describe the tablets as a “Kratom like substance at gas stations or tobacco shops” that people purchase for a “narcotic like effect.”

In September, Hamilton made several purchases at Puffs Vape, Tobacco and Beer Store in Oxford. Store employees Yahya Mohamed Mosleh, 51, and Islam Mohamed, 18, were arrested Friday on a state-level charge of possessing a controlled substance with intent to distribute, officials said. The court documents do not establish that the kratom found near Hamilton when he died came from the store. One of his purchases was made the day before he was found dead.

Court records say a confidential law enforcement informant visited Puffs Vape, Tobacco and Beer Store and asked whether it sold “7 O Kratom based pills.” A clerk allegedly replied, “yes,” then opened a drawer beneath the register and pulled out a package of kratom.

Mosleh allegedly warned the informant to “be quiet” about the pills and to use caution when taking them because “people were dying from them.”

More than 500 units of kratom were seized from the vape store, along with THC cartridges, gummies, pre-rolls and other suspected THC products.
