Bronwyn Newport says she was going through a “dark place” while filming the upcoming seventh season of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, opening up about the emotionally turbulent experience during a Wednesday interview.

In addition to discussing the explosive scene she shared with Todd Bradley, 67, Bronwyn reflected on the birthday incident that contributed to their breakup, her brief dating history and the meaning behind the tattoo marking the end of her marriage. The 41-year-old reality star described season seven as difficult, chaotic and “messy.”

“We had a season. I don’t know what else I could say about it,” Bronwyn told Vulture in an interview published September 30. “I was in a very personally chaotic and messy place, and then so much is going on with all of us.”

The cast was dealing with several major personal upheavals. Mary Cosby’s only child, Robert Cosby Jr., died in February, just as production on season seven was beginning. Months later, Whitney Rose, 39, and Angie Katsanevas, 52, both separated from their husbands, Justin Rose, 58, and Shawn Trujillo, 55.

Bronwyn was also navigating the end of her marriage to Todd. The couple separated last year after nine years together.

Bronwyn recalled one moment when her appearance summed up her state of mind: “At one point during this season, I say to whoever I’m with, ‘Well, I showed up in jeans, so obviously I’m in a very dark place, and I don’t give a f*ck about this conversation.’”

When Bronwyn joined RHOSLC for its fifth season in 2024, she said she was looking for an opportunity that belonged entirely to her.

“Todd had such a big career, and I really felt like a support system for him,” she explained. “Maybe I would make friends, maybe it was an adventure, maybe I’d embarrass myself. I grossly underestimated how it would affect my family.”

Almost a year after separating from Todd, whom she accused of having an “emotional affair” during season five, Bronwyn revisited a seemingly small moment that took on greater meaning. At an ice-cream parlor, Todd ate the cherry from her sundae even though she had previously told him how much she disliked when he did that.

“I cried when I watched that episode,” Bronwyn said. “To watch myself being like, ‘Oh, you a**hole,’ and laugh it off and make these jokes — I didn’t want to laugh it off anymore.”

She said the marriage ultimately reached its breaking point when Todd failed to acknowledge her 40th birthday.

Bronwyn later had a cherry tattoo placed on her shoulder as a tribute to the relationship’s ending.

“Not because the cherry broke us up and I’m happy about that,” she clarified. “Going forward, I always want to notice those things that I’m not saying, that I’m not putting an emphasis on. I don’t ever want to be the kind of person who did that to somebody else, and I don’t ever want to be okay with somebody doing that to me.”

During season seven, Bronwyn — who had a brief romance with Brandon Good, 32, earlier this year — filmed a tense exchange with Todd that ended with him walking away in anger.

Addressing the scene previewed in the trailer, Bronwyn said Todd was the one who approached her about taking part. “Just keep that in mind when you see it: I did not bamboozle Todd into filming ever,” she said.

Although she chose not to reveal the specific personal challenges she was facing, Bronwyn maintained that she remained candid with viewers throughout production.

“As I walked away from the last day we filmed, I thought back on everything I’d said and every decision I made, and I kept thinking, ‘My life is so good and so full and I’m so grateful and optimistic about where it goes,’” she recalled. “It doesn’t mean I haven’t done dumb things, doesn’t mean I haven’t said things I regret, but you can tell when somebody is happy and when somebody is just trying to look happy.”

Once filming ended, Bronwyn headed to New York City in an effort to clear her mind and take some time away.

“It’s a nice excuse to be like, I’m in New York right now, and I’ll see them when I see them,” she reasoned, adding that dating was better in the Big Apple (during her “hot girl summer,” Bronwyn was seen kissing a man who was later confirmed to be married at the U.S. Open).

“For the summer, yeah, I felt like the dating pool, no disrespect but all disrespect, is way better in New York,” she says.

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City season seven airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on Bravo.
