Two people were killed and at least 35 others wounded when a homecoming block party in a Georgia town erupted into violence early Sunday morning.
More than 1,000 people had gathered near Pine Street in Vienna, Ga., for the celebration when gunfire broke out at about 1:25 a.m., Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy said.
The victims were two men, ages 20 and 23, according to Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls. Their families and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have been notified, but officials had not publicly identified them.

The GBI said it will investigate the shooting with local law enforcement agencies.

“Deputies immediately responded to the area and discovered multiple people had been shot,” the GBI said in a statement.
“Deputies also found two people in the 600 block of Pine Street that were pronounced deceased on scene. Victims were taken to several regional hospitals for treatment.”
Officers were already monitoring the crowd when shots were fired from at least two locations roughly a block apart, according to the sheriff.
The shooter’s identity and the motive behind the violence remained unknown Sunday.
