Caleb Flynn became emotional in court after hearing a message from one of his daughters.
The American Idol alum was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn.
At his Oct. 5 sentencing hearing, Caleb, wearing an orange jumpsuit, sobbed as Ashley’s mother, Jill, read a victim impact statement from one of his daughters.
“It’s sad that you can’t love anyone but yourself,” the daughter said, according to Jill. “I wish you could understand that actions have consequences, and you have a lot to pay.”
In the statement, Flynn’s daughter also urged him to acknowledge that he killed Ashley. Flynn has continued to deny murdering his wife.
The 40-year-old’s daughter further addressed his affair with 24-year-old former mistress Alleigha Botner.
“You had the best life ever,” Jill read. “And you decided to throw it away for a girl who is half your age.”
The statement concluded with Flynn’s daughter making clear that she does not intend to visit him in prison.
“And by the way,” Jill read, “I don’t plan on coming to see you.”
What Was Caleb Flynn Convicted Of?
Flynn was convicted Sept. 29 on one count of aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and three counts of tampering with evidence in connection with his wife’s death. He had pleaded not guilty.
“We have deep respect for the jury system in the United States,” Caleb’s attorney, L. Patrick Mulligan, told Oxygen after the conviction. “At the same time, we are disappointed with the results. Not all juries answer questions correctly. I am confident that this decision by the jury will be tested as many times as is required during the appeal process, which will undoubtedly begin after sentencing.”
Following the sentencing, Caleb’s attorney said the defense plans to appeal while maintaining that Flynn did not commit the murder.
“Mr. Flynn vehemently proclaimed his innocence in Court today, as he has maintained since the case first started. We will file a Notice of Appeal once the sentencing entry is filed,” Attorney Patrick Mulligan said in a statement provided to Oxygen. “This will begin a long process with the goal of overturning his convictions. Since the case was tried and the judge was required to make numerous decisions, his appellate team will have arguments to put forward.”
