After multiple setbacks involving the screenplay and pre-production, the long-awaited sequel to The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, finally began shooting in London this summer. However, production on The Batman: Part II has now been temporarily halted because director, writer, and producer Matt Reeves is dealing with a family matter, according to a Monday report from Deadline.
Warner Bros. and DC Studios confirmed the pause in a statement, saying, “Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”
It remains unknown whether the production break will affect the movie’s scheduled release date of February 18, 2028. That date was announced in July 2026 after the sequel was moved from October 1, 2027. The film had already been delayed from earlier release windows in October 2026 and October 2025.
The news will undoubtedly disappoint fans who embraced Matt Reeves’s gritty reinvention of Gotham in 2022. While audiences wait for further updates on The Batman: Part II, Reeves’s filmography offers several compelling movies worth revisiting—or discovering for the first time.
Although it was not Reeves’s first feature film, this acclaimed found-footage horror hit established him as a filmmaker with a distinctive voice and an inventive approach to familiar genre conventions. Written by Drew Goddard, Cloverfield unfolds entirely through recovered camcorder footage as six friends—played by Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, T.J. Miller, Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, and Odette Yustman—try to escape a monstrous attack on New York City. The film became a major box-office success, earned strong reviews, and gave Reeves’s career a significant boost.

Reeves next directed the English-language remake of the Swedish horror film Let the Right One In. The story centers on a lonely 12-year-old boy, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee years before his Oscar-nominated performance in The Power of the Dog, who forms a tender and dangerous bond with a young vampire portrayed by Chloë Grace Moretz. Although it did not match the commercial success of Cloverfield, the film won over critics—and received high praise from horror icon Stephen King.
Reeves made his first major move into blockbuster filmmaking with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the second entry in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series after 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Hired to succeed Rupert Wyatt, Reeves delivered a visually ambitious and emotionally grounded sequel that became a box-office hit and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. Its success led to his return for the follow-up, War for the Planet of the Apes.
The most fitting Matt Reeves movie to revisit while waiting for The Batman: Part II may be the filmmaker’s first journey into Gotham. The Batman introduced Robert Pattinson as the masked vigilante and Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman—a thief and nightclub worker whose path repeatedly intersects with Bruce Wayne’s investigation. Following years of divisive reactions to Zack Snyder’s interpretation of the DC icon, Reeves renewed the franchise with a moody, film-noir-inspired crime thriller that earned both critical acclaim and impressive box-office results. Fans may have to wait longer for the next chapter, but family comes first.
