Marvel’s VisionQuest Stuns Critics in First Reactions

The MCU’s most unconventional television saga is moving into its next chapter. After “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along,” Marvel is returning to Westview-adjacent territory with “VisionQuest” — a series that is already generating plenty of discussion among critics. Watch Looper’s video above for a closer look at the early reaction.

Looper’s own review described the Marvel spin-off as underwhelming and short on fresh ideas, but the broader critical response has been considerably more enthusiastic. At the time of writing, “VisionQuest” holds an impressive 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes. That puts it ahead of “Agatha All Along,” which earned 84%, although it remains below the outstanding 92% achieved by “WandaVision.” The new series therefore appears to be another critical success for Marvel Studios — though whether audiences embrace it just as warmly remains to be seen.

VisionQuest seems destined to become the latest delightfully strange MCU show

The story began with “WandaVision,” in which a grieving Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) built a sitcom-inspired fantasy world where Vision (Paul Bettany) was still alive. Her attempt to escape reality came at a devastating cost: the residents of Westview were forced to live inside the illusion, controlled as if they were characters in a disturbing television production. “Agatha All Along” broadened that storyline by following the scheming witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), who assembled a coven while searching for a way to reclaim the powers Wanda had taken from her.

“VisionQuest” shifts the spotlight to the saga’s other central figure: the reconstructed, white-skinned Vision. Unlike the original version, this rebooted incarnation no longer possesses the same memories, emotional depth, or understanding of his past. As shown in the first trailer, his search for answers leads into a digital environment populated by artificial intelligences from different eras. Among them are Ultron, voiced by James Spader, and a version of J.A.R.V.I.S. portrayed by James D’Arcy that evokes Edwin Jarvis, the Stark family’s longtime butler.

There are already plenty of theories about where “VisionQuest” could go, but the show’s connection to its unpredictable predecessors suggests that viewers should prepare for a few surprises. For a detailed breakdown of the critics’ response, watch Looper’s video above.
