Brandon Gill: Questioning Ilhan Omar’s Immigration Status Isn’t Racist

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) addressed a Department of Justice investigation that reportedly appears to be examining the immigration status of his colleague, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), during Wednesday’s edition of Fox News Channel’s “The Will Cain Show.”

Speaking with host Will Cain, Gill said there were “legitimate questions” surrounding Omar’s immigration history.

Cain asked Gill how he would respond to critics who argue that investigating Omar—or raising questions about Somalia—is inherently racist.

Gill rejected that characterization, arguing that the term is being applied too broadly. “You can ask whether a question has an adequate system of rule of law, and that’s not racist,” the Texas Republican said. He added that asking about corruption in a country or whether it offers a safe environment where its people can flourish also does not constitute racism.

“It’s certainly not a racist question to ask whenever there are very legitimate questions about somebody’s immigration status or under what or how they came into the country,” Gill said. “None of that is racist.”
