A National Guard member was wounded by gunfire in Washington, DC, after stepping in to help break up a fight, police said.
The unidentified Guardsman suffered a gunshot wound to the leg while responding to a brawl on a sidewalk in the Eastern Market area of Capitol Hill at approximately 11:10 p.m. Sunday, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The injured service member was part of a group of roughly seven or eight National Guard personnel who moved to intervene in the late-night confrontation.
Jeffrey Carroll, the Metropolitan Police interim chief, said one of the people involved in the fight then “pulled out a firearm and began shooting.”
“The National Guard members told the individual to drop the firearm. He discharged a round at the National Guard members who returned fire at that suspect,” Carroll told reporters.

Investigators are seeking to speak with anyone who may have been involved in the altercation as police work to determine what led to the shooting.

Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
