Man City Sign Chelsea Star Enzo Fernandez in Record £125m Deal

Manchester City completed a £125 million deadline-day deal for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, but the move left Xabi Alonso’s side furious after Monaco abandoned an agreement for his intended replacement, Lamine Camara.

Fernandez’s transfer matches the British record Liverpool set when they signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle last summer. The £125 million fee is fixed, with no add-ons, and the 25-year-old Argentina international had been Enzo Maresca’s leading target during the window.

The sale pushed Chelsea’s summer spending to around £500 million. Club sources claim that figure also represents a British record, although the Blues completed the deal without securing a replacement for Fernandez.

Chelsea believed they had agreed a £47 million deal to sign Camara from Monaco with fewer than two hours of deadline day remaining. But as the 11pm cutoff approached, Monaco dramatically reversed its position, leaving the west London club stunned and furious.

According to Chelsea sources, the clubs had completed a full written agreement for Camara’s transfer. However, after Monaco renegotiated Folarin Balogun’s proposed move to Everton, Chelsea were informed that the deal for Camara had been withdrawn.

Stamford Bridge insiders condemned Monaco’s conduct as deeply unprofessional and an unacceptable way to handle transfer negotiations.

Chelsea were therefore left without cover for Fernandez. Sources at the club said they could have blocked his move to City after learning of Monaco’s U-turn, but they had already given their word to their Premier League rivals. Unlike Monaco, Chelsea chose to honour that commitment.

The Blues had spent much of deadline day pursuing Camara. Monaco rejected earlier offers of £38.5 million and £42.9 million before finally accepting a third bid.

In a statement released as news of the transfer and Monaco’s decision emerged, Fernandez addressed Chelsea supporters: ‘Chelsea will always have a place in my thoughts and, above all, in my heart. But I also understand how football works. I know how passionate you are, because I am the same. And if I were in your position, I would probably be thinking the same way.’

City’s decision to wait until the final two days of the transfer window to advance club-to-club negotiations left Chelsea with little time to find another midfielder.

Fernandez’s relationship with Maresca was a major factor in Chelsea accepting City’s proposal, with both men keen to work together again. The midfielder had already shown an interest in leaving and had considered his future before last season had even ended.

With Fernandez and Camara both absent—and Dario Essugo departing for Strasbourg on loan—Chelsea’s senior midfield options now include Moises Caicedo, Reece James, Romeo Lavia, Valentin Barco and Jordan Henderson. Malo Gusto could also fill the role if needed. Fernandez’s knack for scoring crucial goals will be missed, although Xabi Alonso can call on a formidable attack after signing Morgan Rogers for £117 million to join Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro in the front three.

After an exhausting transfer saga, Chelsea supporters may at least be relieved that the uncertainty surrounding Fernandez has finally ended.

Chelsea had initially tried to force a swift resolution by setting a 5pm deadline on Friday, August 14, for offers. The club wanted £120 million and communicated the terms to its Premier League counterparts through Fernandez’s representatives, led by Javier Pastore. Chelsea hoped the self-imposed deadline would leave enough time to replace the 2022 World Cup winner.

City ignored that deadline and did not submit an offer at the time. Chelsea insiders subsequently claimed they ‘expected’ Fernandez to remain at Stamford Bridge throughout the 2026-27 season.

Fernandez was even handed the captain’s armband when he came on as a substitute during Chelsea’s final home friendly against Real Sociedad, though his reception inside Stamford Bridge was mixed.

Fernandez came off the bench in Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham. Home supporters at Craven Cottage jeered him over Argentina’s conduct at the World Cup, while the visiting Chelsea fans offered a far warmer response and even chanted his name.

Fernandez continued to train with his team-mates and in Alonso’s main squad rather than the second group including Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson, but then disappeared.

Following talks with Alonso, he was not involved in their Carabao Cup win over Luton, or in their Premier League victory against Brighton. Alonso insisted publicly it was his decision after speaking with the player, but did add he selected a squad that had the ‘desire to play’.

Maresca had a good relationship with Fernandez at Chelsea, where he often wore the captain’s armband in the absence of James. Maresca also handed him that armband barely a month after the Argentinian was accused of singing a racist song following his country’s 2024 Copa America triumph. That was in Chelsea’s Premier League opener at home to City.

When Maresca eventually exited Chelsea after speaking with City about succeeding Pep Guardiola, Fernandez was among those who spoke up, suggesting it ‘hurt’ the team. The Blues ended up finishing 10th in that season, leaving them with no European football under Alonso for this term.
