Celebrity Moms Who Welcomed Children in Their 50s, Including Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank’s surprise pregnancy announcement at 52 has sparked both celebration and debate, including questions about whether she is too old to become a mother again. The Oscar-winning actor welcomed twins, Aya and Ohm, with her husband, Philip Schneider, at 48 and has previously spoken openly about delaying motherhood while building her career. “There were a lot of things that kept that from happening, and so I can really take time to be with them,” Swank told People in October 2026. She added that becoming a parent in her 20s or 30s would have made her “a much different parent” than she is today. Though unusual, having children later in life is not unprecedented—particularly among celebrities.

Swank is far from the first famous woman to experience motherhood in her 50s. Janet Jackson surprised fans when she announced her pregnancy shortly before turning 50, later welcoming her son, Eissa, in 2017 with her former husband, Wissam Al Mana. Of all her accomplishments, Jackson has said motherhood remains the most meaningful. “The most important thing I’ve done, the biggest thing I’ve done, is become a mother, and it’s had a beautiful impact on my life,” she told The Guardian in September 2024. Jackson has also acknowledged that she sometimes wishes she had started her family sooner. “I wish I had two more babies!” she told ET in May 2023, while adding, “I’m just thankful God gave me Eissa. I’m very fortunate.”

Brigitte Nielsen had her daughter at 54

Brigitte Nielsen understood that becoming a mother again well beyond her earlier childbearing years would be difficult, but she continued trying. At 54, she became pregnant in 2018 after years of pursuing IVF and later welcomed daughter Frida with her husband, Mattia Dessi. Looking back on her path to becoming a mother of five, Nielsen told People in November 2023 that doctors had initially cautioned her against getting her hopes up because her chances of conceiving were extremely low. “So when it finally happened, it was just amazing,” she recalled. “And then there was fear, because I was such high-risk, being 54.”

Like Swank, Nielsen faced criticism for having a baby later in life, but the backlash did not diminish her happiness. Before Frida’s birth, Nielsen was already raising four adult children from previous relationships, including her youngest son, Raoul, who was born 23 years before Frida. Defending her decision, Nielsen said she now had the patience and additional love that came with being “a grandmother’s age.” She also believed her circumstances made her better prepared for motherhood. “When I was a younger mom, I was often juggling being single, being on a plane, on a movie set,” she explained. “Now Frida comes first.”

Diane Keaton decided to adopt in her 50s

Diane Keaton never married, but she became a devoted mother to daughter Dexter and son Duke, whom she adopted in her 50s. The “Annie Hall” star had considered starting a family for years, but several major life events eventually pushed her to reconsider her future. In a February 2004 interview with Lesley Stahl, cited by CBS News, Keaton said her father’s illness and death, along with the end of a relationship—presumably her on-and-off romance with Al Pacino—prompted her decision. “I also had to take a long, hard look about what I was going to do with the rest of my life,” she said.

Keaton adopted Dexter in 1996 and Duke in 2001, raising both children on her own. She never portrayed motherhood as effortless, calling it “the most humbling experience in [my] life.” “It’s not easy. It’s not,” she told The Guardian in May 2014. “But I love them.” Keaton also acknowledged that becoming a parent changed her perspective and gave her a purpose beyond herself. “It’s given me a purpose other than myself, which is really nice,” she told The Independent in July 2015. The beloved actor died in 2025 at age 79.

Hoda Kotb didn’t become a mom until she was in her 50s

Hoda Kotb had always imagined becoming a mother, but the road to parenthood proved more complicated than she expected. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in her 40s, she learned that conceiving naturally might not be possible. “I just sobbed,” Kotb recalled in a March 2022 interview with Good Housekeeping, cited by People. “I thought, ‘Well, that’s that, isn’t it?’” Although she later married, that relationship eventually ended, and her dream of motherhood remained unfulfilled until she was in her 50s.

Kotb continued to feel a powerful desire to become a parent. “Finally I said to myself one day, ‘Why can’t I? Why not me?’” she told People in May 2017. That year, at 52, she adopted her first daughter, Haley Joy, with her then-fiancé, Joel Schiffman. Two years later, at 54, she and Schiffman adopted their second daughter, Hope Catherine. Although the couple later ended their engagement, they have continued to co-parent amicably.

Kotb has said she would not alter her path to motherhood, though being labeled an “older mom” has sometimes made her uncomfortable. “I kind of get an ouch, even though it’s true,” she told Jenna Bush Hager on the “Open Book with Jenna” podcast in September 2025. Over time, however, she has learned to view her age as a strength. “I am kind of sitting in the fact that I come with wisdom now,” Kotb said.

Madonna adopted her twin daughters in her 50s

Madonna is a doting mother of six children; Lourdes, Rocco, David, and Mercy, plus twins Estere and Stella, whom she adopted despite the fact the pop superstar was inching towards her 60s. In an August 2026 Instagram post, the “Holiday” hitmaker sweetly reminisced about feeling a “deep connection” with her daughters after meeting them at an orphanage during a trip to Malawi in 2015. Two years later, she returned to formally adopt the twins, making Estere and Stella part of her growing family. “It’s inexplicable,” Madonna enthused to People in September 2017. “It’s like saying, ‘Why do you fall in love with the people you fall in love with?’ […] You feel their soul, you feel touched by them — that’s it.” Thankfully, her other children were fully supportive. Naturally, Mercy and David, whom the iconic pop star also adopted from Malawi, were the most excited to meet their new siblings.

“There might have been [a feeling of], ‘Oh, we have to share you with more people’ — not jealousy, but an adjustment,” Madonna said. But Estere and Stella fit right in: “It’s like they were always here. It didn’t take long for them to get acclimated.” Still, it’s hard to imagine being a mom of six at 68 (as of 2026) is easy, even for someone as privileged and influential as Madonna. While speaking to Vanity Fair in Jauary 2023, the “Vogue” hitmaker got candid about her struggles with motherhood, confirming that she’s still figuring it out as she goes. “Because, whoever you are, having children and raising them is a work of art. And no one gives you a manual,” Madonna pointed out (via Page Six), adding, “You have to learn from mistakes. […] And it is exhausting because there is never rest.”

Naomi Campbell finally became a mom at 50

Naomi Campbell revealed that she had become a mother in a surprise Instagram post in May 2021. People close to the English supermodel said the announcement fulfilled a dream she had carried for more than a decade. “She’s wanted a baby for a long time, more than 10 years,” an insider told People at the time. “Anyone who’s surprised Naomi is having a baby on her own, her own way, and on her own timetable doesn’t know Naomi Campbell.” Campbell was 50 when she announced the arrival of her daughter with a photo of herself cradling the baby’s feet. Three years later, at 53, she welcomed a son via surrogacy.

Campbell had spoken for years about wanting children. In a May 2017 interview with Evening Standard magazine, she said, “I think about having children all the time,” although she was not in a hurry. The model also told Vogue Arabia in November 2018 that she had always loved being around children. “I love kids and always will,” she said, according to The Guardian. By February 2022, she told British Vogue, “I always knew that one day I would be a mother.” After waiting until the time felt right, Campbell called motherhood “the best thing I’ve ever done.”
