Northwestern University Student Dies After Being Pulled From Lake Michigan in Evanston

EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) — A 19-year-old Northwestern University student died Wednesday morning after being rescued from Lake Michigan in Evanston.

Officials said the student was found in the water at about 7 a.m. near 70 Arts Circle Drive.

Members of the Evanston Fire Department pulled the unresponsive woman from the lake and began emergency life-saving efforts. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Northwestern confirmed that the woman was enrolled at the university and was not an Evanston resident.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as a 19-year-old woman.

“Lake Michigan can be dangerous. Hazard warnings and signs prohibiting swimming and fishing are posted along Northwestern University’s lakefront property,” Evanston officials said in an update. Evanston police urged the public to obey posted warnings, review lake conditions before going near the water and follow directions from city or university officials. People were also advised to stay off break walls and rocks.

Northwestern is providing support services to students following the death.

Authorities have not released additional details as the investigation continues.
