Chris Brown was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to a 2023 nightclub brawl in London.
LONDON, UK — Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown avoided prison Monday after admitting he attacked a music producer with a tequila bottle at a London nightclub three years ago.
The 37-year-old singer received an eight-month sentence, which was suspended for one year.
Brown had faced up to three years behind bars after pleading guilty in July to affray over the incident on the dance floor at Tape, a private club in the upscale Mayfair neighborhood, in February 2023.
Court footage showed Brown being restrained after striking the victim, his former friend Abraham Diaw, twice in the head with a bottle.
“The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous; it carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained,” Judge Tony Baumgartner said at Southwark Crown Court.
Although the judge described the attack as serious, Baumgartner said Brown did not meet the threshold for an immediate custodial sentence. He cited the singer’s guilty plea, stable employment and charity work as mitigating factors. The judge also noted Brown’s previous convictions but said he had maintained a clean record in recent years.
Previous brushes with the law
Brown has encountered repeated legal problems since his felony conviction for assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, in 2009, shortly before the pair were scheduled to perform at the Grammy Awards.
He has been arrested in multiple U.S. states following altercations, though he was not charged in some cases and prosecutors later dropped charges in others. In 2019, Brown was arrested in Paris and questioned on suspicion of rape before being released without charge.
As part of the agreement surrounding his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped allegations of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon—the bottle.
Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month suspended sentence.
Under English law, affray involves using or threatening unlawful violence in a way that causes another person to fear for their safety.

Brown has apologized for the attack
Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe told the court that Brown had played a leading role in the attack.
“By any circumstances, when one watches that footage, it is Mr. Brown that moves first,” Stonecliffe said.
Defense attorney Sallie Bennett-Jenkins said Brown had apologized to everyone at the club, while emphasizing that the confrontation lasted no more than 20 seconds.
“This is an ugly and unattractive incident,” Bennett-Jenkins said. “It is something which undoubtedly would have caused distress to those who are present and for which Mr. Brown … offers a profound apology to all those present.”
Stonecliffe said Diaw was treated at a hospital and discharged with injuries to his head and knee.
Crowds greet Brown outside court
Outside the courthouse, fans who had traveled from countries including Italy and the Netherlands cheered for Brown.
Brown’s face was largely concealed by a black mask and dark sunglasses, while his bleached hair was mostly covered by a black baseball cap. He wore a black leather jacket over a light-colored turtleneck.
As he made his way through a crowd of photographers and onlookers, Brown blew a kiss to one fan and appeared to sign an autograph for another.
Not everyone was cheering for him. When he arrived at court in the morning, a lone voice could be heard shouting at him to ask when he was going to learn that violence is not OK.
Brown left the United Kingdom after the brawl but was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel after flying to the city for a concert. He had been free on bail of $6.7 million, which allowed him to tour Europe and North America the past two summers.
Brown rose to stardom as a teen in 2005 and won his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 for “F.A.M.E.” He earned his second in the same category for “11:11 (Deluxe)” in 2025.
