Gavin Newsom Weighs In on Nicki Minaj for White House Role

Gavin Newsom said “we can only pray” that Nicki Minaj becomes the next White House press secretary after Trump administration officials publicly floated the “Super Bass” singer for the role.

President Donald Trump and Minaj joked about her potentially replacing Katie Zacharia during a weekend event in Michigan, where Trump also complimented the rapper’s derriere.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung joined the speculation, posting: “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!”

Newsom, a Democrat widely viewed as a possible contender for his party’s 2028 presidential nomination, responded on social media: “We can only pray.”

The California governor did not explain why he appeared to welcome the possibility. However, he and Minaj have clashed in the political arena before.

In January, the rapper borrowed a tactic associated with Trump by creating a mocking nickname for the California governor.

“Oh Gavvy pooh, it only gets worse from here for you, buddy,” Minaj wrote on X.

“It’s the end of the road for you, my love. Get on the nearest jet ski & let that beautiful hair blow in the wind. It will make you happier than this race that you will not win. Enjoy life. Peace.”

Minaj also likened Newsom to Tom Cruise while dismissing his presidential ambitions as “impossible.”

“Gavin is the cute boy who got everything handed to him b/c of how cute & sexy & hot & smoking he was. Oohhh look @‘m. Sitting there in that suit with the sneakers on. He thinks he’s Tom Cruise only difference is, his next mission IS impossible. He should get another leading role”

The Daily Mail has contacted Newsom and the White House for comment.

Before the rally, Minaj showcased her political views during a conversation with Cheung on Sunday.

The pair spoke aboard Air Force One as it traveled to the Michigan rally. Cheung later shared a clip of their exchange and suggested Minaj could become Trump’s new press secretary following Zacharia’s departure earlier this month.

Trump’s trusted aide wrote: “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary! @NICKIMINAJ.”

Minaj responded by reposting Cheung’s message alongside an American flag emoji and a laughing face with a bead of sweat, appearing to keep her response to the proposal deliberately coy.

During the conversation, Cheung asked Minaj, who was wearing a $6,000 Gucci suit, for her assessment of the economy under President Trump.

“Well, we have a president who understands economics first of all. You know, I’ve said before that the president is, naturally, a businessman. He’s worked his way out of not having a dollar left in the bank,” Minaj replied.

She continued: ‘If he can do that himself, with his own finances, surely he knows what to do with the country.’

Touting Trump’s foreign policy acumen, Minaj gushed: ‘He’s tough internationally. He tells them what we need, not what they need.’

Ahead of Trump’s rally, Minaj told the Daily Mail: ‘This election is the most important midterm election of our lifetimes.’

‘We need to make sure that our great President has a great team in Congress to work with during his final two years in office so he can continue to create great programs like the Trump Accounts, which I am a proud supporter of,’ she added.

Trump is tapping into celebrity star power in the final days of his midterm campaign swing. Other recent guests have included boxers Mike Tyson, Jake Paul, Floyd Mayweather, Evander Holyfield and country music artist Jason Aldean.

En route to Trump’s Sunday afternoon rally in Port Huron, Minaj also touted his work ethic.

‘The man won three elections!’ she exclaimed, continuing, ‘he wakes up at four o’clock in the morning. He outworks people who are half his age.’

‘What does that say about his character? He’s paying it forward. He’s thinking about the other Republicans who have to win in this election. That tells me that he’s a great guy,’ she said while closing her speech.
