WASHINGTON — The Justice Department is intensifying its investigation into Alaska’s Senate race, with dozens of additional grand jury subpoenas expected to be issued Thursday, according to people familiar with the matter.
The subpoenas are expected to focus on attempts to recruit a candidate who shared the name of Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, the incumbent in the race.
The move follows a New York Times investigation that detailed the alleged effort and reported ties to Democratic campaign officials. The report also said Democratic candidate Mary Peltola knew about the recruitment efforts.

According to a Justice Department official, prosecutors are weighing potential charges involving an alleged conspiracy to infringe on voters’ rights.
Acting at President Trump’s direction, the department filed a civil lawsuit last week seeking to block Alaska from certifying the election results if Sen. Sullivan loses while a purported “decoy” candidate — Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. — remains on the ballot.
