A Minnesota man is facing attempted murder and assault charges after authorities say he attacked his roommate during the night, less than a year after the two began living together.

Antonio Baumgartner, 30, remains held at the Hennepin County Jail after being charged with assault and attempted second-degree murder. A criminal complaint reviewed by Law&Crime states that officers responded Thursday to a Bloomington, Minnesota, residence and found an unidentified man covered in blood, pressing a towel against his injuries. Though his wounds were considered life-threatening, he was able to tell police that his roommate, whom the complaint identified as Baumgartner, had allegedly stabbed him while he slept.

The victim reportedly told investigators that he and Baumgartner had shared the home for approximately 10 months. He said he was awakened by a “loud pounding” at his bedroom door, followed by Baumgartner allegedly entering and launching an unprovoked knife attack. Authorities say Baumgartner then left the residence.

Officers initially spotted two significant stab wounds on the victim’s arm and later discovered a serious abdominal injury. The complaint says the man required roughly six hours of surgery to treat the damage.

Investigators later spoke with Baumgartner’s sister, who said he called her at about 2:20 a.m. and remarked, “I’ve had it with this place.” He asked her to pick him up from the home. She told police she believed Baumgartner had been using drugs that night and was worried about his condition.

Police eventually located Baumgartner at the site of a reported break-in and took him into custody. Authorities said blood was visible on his pants when he was arrested.

Baumgartner is being held on $1 million bail and is expected to make his next court appearance Monday.
