WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson told members of his staff Wednesday that he will not seek the position of minority leader in the next Congress, according to multiple sources familiar with the decision who spoke to The Post. The announcement came after Republicans suffered a generational defeat in the midterm elections.
Johnson, R-La., became speaker in October 2023 after internal Republican divisions forced Kevin McCarthy from the post. He subsequently led one of the narrowest House majorities in modern history.
In the weeks before Tuesday’s election, Johnson repeatedly expressed confidence that Republicans could overcome historical trends and retain control of the chamber.

Instead, Democrats appear on track to win one of the House’s largest majorities since former President Barack Obama took office.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, is now widely expected to seek the top Republican leadership position.
Johnson is expected to remain in Congress after leaving the leadership, according to one source.
