“It is with heavy hearts that 3rd Marine Division announces the death of a Marine following a training incident at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan, on Nov. 3, 2026,” the division said in a statement provided to ABC News.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of our Marine,” the statement added.

Officials are expected to keep the Marine’s identity private until at least 24 hours after the next of kin has been notified, Lt. Tyler Thomas, a spokesperson for the III Marine Expeditionary Force, told the outlet.

The military has not disclosed whether the Marine died at Camp Schwab or after being taken to a hospital. Thomas also declined to say whether other people were hurt in the incident, ABC News reported.

FOX News Digital has contacted the 3rd Marine Division for additional information.

Approximately 50,000 U.S. military personnel are stationed across Japan, and Okinawa is home to the largest share. The island remained under U.S. administration from the end of World War II until 1972.

Today, nearly 80,000 Americans reside on Okinawa, including roughly 30,000 active-duty members representing all four branches of the U.S. military. The Marine Corps maintains the largest presence on the island.
