Alanis Morissette Comes Out as Pansexual at 52

Alanis Morissette has publicly identified as pansexual at the age of 52.

The “Jagged Little Pill” singer discussed her sexuality during a recent appearance on the “Handsome” podcast, hosted by lesbian comedians Tig Notaro and Fortune Feimster alongside non-binary screenwriter Mae Martin.

The conversation turned to Morissette’s famously emotional and angst-filled music when Feimster told her, “I’m sorry for the men that hurt you, but I’m not sorry for the songs that came from it.”

Feimster then asked whether those experiences had ever made Morissette want to identify as a lesbian.

“I’m pansexual, so yeah,” Morissette replied without hesitation.

Notaro appeared surprised by the disclosure and asked, “Wait, you’re not really pansexual, are you?”

“I am,” Morissette confirmed with a nod. Martin then added, “Me too!”

Pansexuality generally refers to experiencing romantic, emotional or sexual attraction to people regardless of their gender identity or sex.

The term is distinct from bisexuality, although the identities can overlap. Bisexuality broadly describes attraction to more than one gender and may include transgender and non-binary people.

The “Head Over Feet” singer has largely kept her romantic life private, despite relationships with several high-profile men over the years.

Morissette has also spoken candidly about previously struggling with love and sex addiction.

Her relationship with “Full House” actor Dave Coulier famously helped inspire her best-selling album, “Jagged Little Pill.”

She later dated actor Dash Mihok and attorney Tom Ballanco. Morissette is now married to rapper Mario “Souleye” Treadway.

The Grammy-winning artist also began dating actor Ryan Reynolds in 2002. The pair were engaged for three years before ending their relationship in 2007.

Following their split, Reynolds began dating Scarlett Johansson two months later. He married Johansson 18 months afterward, though the couple divorced in 2011. He went on to marry Blake Lively in 2012.

In 2008, Morissette’s interview with Howard Stern about the breakup attracted renewed attention. During the conversation, she attempted to laugh off invasive questions about her sex life and said she had needed therapy five days a week to cope with the heartbreak.

Looking back on the interview, Morissette told The Sunday Times in June that it represented “the ongoing normalisation of me being invisible.” She added that she would respond very differently to such intrusive questions today.

“I have a million questions I could ask back that would be equally inappropriate. It just became normalised to hurt women every day, call her a b****, tell her she’s a slut,” she said.

When Stern brought up her earlier comment about attending therapy five times a week after the breakup, Morissette stressed: “Therapy’s not about the guy… It’s about me. It’s not about the guy.”

Stern also questioned her about Reynolds quickly moving on with Johansson. Morissette paused before he pressed her, asking whether Reynolds had come home and announced that he was seeing someone else. She emphatically replied, “No.”

Asked whether she had anticipated the end of the relationship, Morissette nodded and acknowledged that she had prepared herself for the breakup.

Stern then asked whether Reynolds was the type of person to move on immediately after falling for someone else. Morissette replied, “I can’t speak for him, I have no idea.”

Morissette married Souleye, whose real name is Mario Treadway, in 2010. The couple have two sons and a daughter, aged between 15 and six.

“There are just so many qualities in him that were slam-dunky,” she told The Sunday Times of her husband.

“If I would talk about something on a date, typically the person would look at me quizzically like I was strange. It was the complete opposite with Souleye. He had zero desire to clip my wings.”

Morissette has said her past experiences with love and sex addiction may be connected to her identity as an empath.

The singer is currently performing her Los Angeles residency, “Butterfly with a Machete,” a show that combines music with personal storytelling.
