Kaiju No. 8 Producer Unveils Initial Setbacks and the Key to Its Turnaround Success

The creator behind Kaiju No. 8 The Game shares insights into the dramatic journey toward the game’s release and its triumph.

In a candid discussion with Automaton Media, Director Shinya Fujita of Kaiju No. 8 The Game expressed his appreciation, acknowledging, “We’re fortunate to have had a successful launch. Aligning the game’s debut with the anime’s premiere was a formidable task, but with everyone’s concerted effort, the release was warmly welcomed.”

Fujita went on to discuss the challenges of the mobile game industry, describing it as a ‘Warring States period’ over the last ten years, where capturing attention for a new game is incredibly challenging. “Our success in attracting a significant number of players is largely due to the strong partnerships with the teams behind the original manga and anime,” he noted.

“The mobile game market has been in a so-called ‘Warring States period’ for the past decade, and simply getting people to notice a new title, let alone play it, has become extremely difficult,” Fujita explained. “I think we were able to reach so many players precisely because of the strong collaboration we had with the production teams of the original manga and anime.”

Inside the Chaotic Launch of Kaiju No. 8 The Game

Fujita went on to discuss why Kaiju No. 8 The Game has managed to achieve serious success despite a difficult launch and, more importantly, waves of generally middling reviews. “Since it’s a title based on an existing IP, releasing the game during the anime’s airing – when the hype was at its peak – was an extremely important factor.”

“Since the original series appeals to a wide range of people, regardless of age or gender, we adjusted things like character acquisition and quest difficulty in a way that anyone could play smoothly,” Fujita added. “I think those efforts are what ultimately helped us reach several million players worldwide right after launch.”

Based on the hit manga by Naoya Matsumoto and the breakout anime series by Studio Khara and Production I.G, Kaiju No. 8 The Game was developed by Akatsuki Games Inc. and released in September 2025. Kaiju No. 8 The Game offers players the chance to step into the roles of their favorite characters from the Kaiju No. 8 anime and do battle against all manner of menacing monstrosities.

While fans were certainly excited for Kaiju No. 8 The Game, the title was ultimately met with less-than-stellar reviews from both critics and gamers. Fortunately, Akatsuki Games Inc. has supplied the title with plenty of regular updates, ensuring players don’t burn through the game with nowhere else to go.

Currently, fans of the Kaiju No. 8 anime are looking forward to its upcoming adaptation of the final story arc of the original manga, which concluded last year after 16 volumes. News that Kaiju No. 8‘s ‘final arc’ is officially in production came during Shonen Jump‘s Jump Festa 2026 back in December. So far, the anime has amassed two seasons, as well as multiple animated specials and the recently released animated feature, Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon, which, like the series, proved to be a major hit with audiences.
