Since their inception in the 1960s, mecha, the towering robots of anime, have captivated audiences with their immense scale, epic battles, and themes of relentless human spirit triumphing over adversity. Initially depicted as advanced machines, these colossal figures have gradually transformed into near-divine entities capable of obliterating galaxies and bending the fabric of reality.
While Neon Genesis Evangelion is often hailed by anime enthusiasts as the pinnacle of mecha storytelling, the genre boasts an array of machines that far surpass the biological giants of Evangelion. Iconic series like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Space Runaway Ideon present mecha-driven narratives with conflicts that rival the cataclysmic Third Impact of Evangelion. In these stories, Spiral Power is harnessed to conjure weapons that dwarf even the known universe.
In the 2009 film Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Lagann-hen, the Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann stands as the zenith of Spiral Power. Under the direction of Hiroyuki Imaishi, this colossal robot emerges as a testament to sheer willpower during the climactic battle against the Anti-Spiral. The protagonist, Simon, commands this formidable entity by merging a million Gurren Lagann units into a unified, unstoppable force.
Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Turns Galaxies into Weapons
Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann serves as the ultimate evolution of Spiral Power in the 2009 film Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Lagann-hen. Director Hiroyuki Imaishi showcases this mechanical titan as a manifestation of pure will during the final confrontation against the Anti-Spiral. Simon pilots this entity after uniting a million Gurren Lagann units into a single, cohesive force.
The original Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is approximately 10 million light-years in height, whereas the Super version has no fixed height. Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann utilizes eternally evolving Spiral Power to grow stronger based on the pilot’s emotional intensity and fighting spirit. This godlike mecha hurls entire galaxies like shuriken and reforms probability to negate the fate of the universe.
Ideon Is Powerful Enough to Destroy the Universe When Fully Charged
In the 1980 television series Space Runaway Ideon, the Ideon is a mecha 105 meters high with a weight of approximately 5650 tons. What’s interesting about this mecha is that it is made out of three trucks that are covered with Ideonite armor and features the Ide Gauge that fills as it fights and experiences emotional moments and deaths.
When the Ide Gauge is fully charged, it opens the infinite Ide, which is a god-like power that is judgmental of life. The Ideon’s other weapons include thousands of missile pods, the Ideon Sword, which is a beam of light that cuts through planets, and the Ideon Gun, equippied with a beam that can destroy a whole galaxy.
Gunbuster Shoots Black Holes At Light Speed
In Hideaki Anno’s Gunbuster OVA, Noriko Takaya and Kazumi Amano battle terrifying space monsters in the Gunbuster. This mecha is made of Buster Machines 1 and 2 and reaches a total height of 240 meters and weighs 9,800 tons. Despite its size, the Gunbuster is much faster than one would expect, as its Degenerative Generators provide the necessary power for near-light-speed travel.
The Gunbuster’s attacks include the Inazuma Kick, which is a drop kick, and a powerful Buster Beam delivered by the head eye. However, this mecha’s greatest feat was when it detonated the black hole bomb known as Buster Machine 3. This created a massive black hole during Gunbuster’s finale that allowed humanity to destroy the Space Monsters’ command brain at the center of the galaxy.
Getter Emperor Consumes Whole Universes
Ken Ishikawa created the Getter Robo manga arcs that feature the infinitely expanding and powerful Getter Emperor. Three planet-sized Getter ships combine to form a machine that begins at galactic size and grows without limits. Green evolutionary energy known as Getter Rays fuels this endless regeneration.
The Emperor has the ability to consume planets, stars, and full universes, shoot massive Getter Beams over 400 million light years, squeeze down its targets with gravity fields, and collapse wormholes. Getter Emperor endangers every life form by being an irrepressible developmental power that has no boundaries. This entity transcends the concept of a simple machine to become a cosmic force that redefines reality as the absolute pinnacle of mechanical evolution.
Mazinger Zero Rebuilds Reality With Limitless Power
Shin Mazinger ZERO introduces the mecha Mazinger ZERO that stands roughly 20 meters high and is made of Super Alloy -Z using photonic energy. Mazinger ZERO has seven black boxes that activate powers like regeneration, assimilation, strengthening, prediction of the future, metamorphosis, a causality weapon called reality warping, and the Majin Change to the ZERO form.
Using these powers, Mazinger ZERO erases time, controls dark matter, and summons versions of itself from across the multiverse to ensure its dominance in its universe. This mecha can also burn planets and eat multiverse timelines to rewrite reality with itself alone. The JDGX Devil Gundam has a base height of 23.9 meters, although it transforms into colossal sizes such as the planetary-sized Colony Devil Gundam. The Devil Gundam’s weapons are four head vulcans that can kill moving fighters, fingertip high-energy beam cannons, and the Devil Finger. Macross’ Vf-25 Messiah Valkyrie Is the Ultimate Alien Destroyer
Macross Frontier features the VF-25 Messiah Valkyrie as the high-speed successor to the older VF-171 model. Shinsei Industry and L.A.I. based the design on the YF-24 prototype for S.M.S. pilots like Alto Saotome. The 15-meter Battroid mode offers incredible agility against the alien Vajra during the conflict of 2059. The design has three mode transformations: Fighter jet, GERWALK hybrid and Battroid robot.
The Ex-Gear ejection suit system allows the cockpit to survive extreme G-forces during high-speed maneuvers. ISC inertia converters utilize Vajra Fold Quartz to enable the mecha’s stealth and multipurpose configurations for different mission profiles. Pilots configure the Messiah as a fighter-bomber or a reconnaissance platform depending on the needs of the fleet.
