Underrated Sci-Fi Anime Classic from Cartoon Network Returns After 21-Year Hiatus

During the 2000s, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block played a crucial role in introducing audiences to many now-iconic anime series. These broadcasts helped elevate the status of certain shows that might not have gained much attention in Japan. Among them is a lesser-known title that is about to be preserved through physical media, courtesy of a dedicated company.

MediaOCD has announced the launch of the Discotek Deep Dives project. This initiative aims to archive hard-to-find anime Blu-rays previously released by Discotek Media. One such anime is s-CRY-ed, a science fiction series that once aired on Adult Swim. With plans to release these titles monthly, fans will have another opportunity to add these works to their personal collections.

Discotek Media is renowned for producing Blu-ray collections of anime, especially focusing on classic titles. Despite their efforts, many of these collections are no longer in print, making them difficult for collectors to access. Fortunately, MediaOCD’s Discotek Deep Dives project is stepping up to ensure these titles remain available for enthusiasts.

Discotek is one of the premiere companies producing Blu-ray collections of anime, with a particular focus on retro titles. However, even with its dedication to these endeavors, many of these titles have since gone out of print, making certain just as hard as ever to watch for collectors. Thankfully, MediaOCD is stepping in and stepping up to keep these titles around through the Discotek Deep Dives project.

Every month, between 20 and 30 anime titles will be able to order through MediaOCD‘s website, with more obscure titles being prioritized over others. One of these will be s-CRY-ed, a once-popular science fiction anime featuring a world where 1% of the local population have developed superhuman abilities. Originally released in 2001, it was later broadcast on Adult Swim in 2005 and first released on DVD in the U.S. in the same year. Many praised the story for developing far beyond its initially cliché scope, resulting in a plot that had many twists and turns.

Besides s-CRY-ed, the other initial Discotek Deep Dives titles include:

  • Galaxy Express 999 The Movie
  • Adieu Galaxy Express 999
  • Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy
  • Angel Cop
  • Goku: Midnight Eye
  • Genocyber
  • Golgo 13: The Professional
  • Kimagure Orange Road TV
  • Kimagure Orange Road OAV + Movie
  • Super Dimension Century Orguss
  • KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple S1
  • KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple S2
  • Lupin the Third Part 1
  • Mobile Cop Jiban (part of the Metal Heroes franchise)
  • Dallos
  • Cleopatra
  • Crusher Joe
  • Crusher Joe: The OVAs
  • Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid

As mentioned, many of these are retro titles, with the anime themselves coming out decades ago. For instance, Genocyber is a notable mecha OVA made in the grim and gritty vein of that era, while Kimagure Orange Road was a major influence on the Vaporwave and Future Funk musical genres. Galaxy Express 999 was similar to iconic spacefaring anime such as Captain Harlock and Space Battleship Yamato, among others.

Conversely, Super Dimension Century Orguss was part of the Super Dimension trilogy from Big West, with the first entry in this sub-franchise being none other than the original Macross anime. These titles are scheduled to begin shipping by the middle of February, with those ordering from MediaOCD getting an exclusive slipcover for their Blu-rays.
