Among Studio Ghibli’s most captivating creations is the extraordinary Howl’s castle. This architectural marvel, originally imagined by novelist Diana Wynne Jones and later animated by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki in the 2004 film Howl’s Moving Castle, is now available in a miniature version for fans yearning to own a piece of anime magic.
In 2023, the official “Ki-Gu-Mi” 3D puzzle kit of Howl’s Moving Castle made its debut, thanks to Donguri Sora. This isn’t just any model kit; it’s a user-friendly puzzle that requires no additional tools like scissors or glue. According to the description on Donguri Sora’s website, the kit “reproduces the unique and intricate castle down to the smallest detail,” making it a perfect gift for anime enthusiasts who dream of bringing a slice of Howl’s enchanting world into their living space. A gallery of images showcases the completed puzzle for those curious to see the final masterpiece.
The Ki-Gu-Mi puzzle kit ingeniously captures the castle’s distinct, weathered look using plywood to form each piece. Despite the simplicity of the materials, the design successfully mirrors the castle’s rusted, mechanical essence. Beyond its visual appeal, the castle serves practical purposes. The creators cleverly incorporated desk-friendly features: two hollow chimney entrances function as pen holders, while the domed accents can store cards, and the castle’s “mouth” offers a spot for paper clips. When assembled, this remarkable piece stands approximately 5.7 inches (14.6 cm) tall, making it a charming addition to any workspace.

Like most Ki-Gu-Mi puzzles, each of the included pieces is crafted from plywood. However, the design still manages to recreate the castle’s rusted, mechanical appearance. In addition to serving as a decorative piece, the designers also integrated practical functions for desk and office use. As shown above, two of the hollow chimney entrances can be used as pen holders, while the ridges on one of the domed accents can hold cards. Additionally, the “mouth” of the structure can hold paper clips. The castle, when completed, stands approximately 5.7 inches (or 14.6 cm) tall.
Jones’ novel, Howl’s Moving Castle, first appeared on bookshelves in 1986. A loose adaptation, Ghibli’s anime film follows Sophie Hatter, a young woman with a kind heart but poor self-esteem. After a magical encounter with the infamous wizard, Howl, Sophie finds herself cursed with the appearance of a 90-year-old woman. Desperate for help, Sophie departs from home to seek help from Howl. Along the way, she crosses paths with a sentient scarecrow whom she names “Turnip Head.”
After being allowed aboard Howl’s castle, Sophie discovers that it is powered by a disgruntled fire demon named Calcifer. After revealing that he is bound to Howl by a curse he cannot speak of, the wily demon offers Sophie help in exchange for his own freedom. While working for Howl as a cleaning lady, Sophie uncovers many of the house’s magical secrets, including its connection to doorways in several different cities. While growing closer to Turnip Head, Calcifer and Howl’s young apprentice Markl, she also finds herself slowly falling in love with Howl. However, her situation becomes more complicated when she learns that Howl is under a spell that is slowly turning him into a monster.
Notably, this 3D puzzle was also re-released in July 2025. However, the retail price has not changed since its last restock. Including tax, Ghibli fans will have to pay approximately 14,600 yen, which is roughly $110.53 USD at the time of this writing. While Donguri Sora does not ship its products overseas, they are often resold through international online retailers such as Meccha Japan and Sugoi Mart.
Depending on the viewer’s geographical location, Howl’s Moving Castle is currently streaming on Max or Netflix.
