A Brisbane man has been charged with multiple offences during a police crackdown on illegal e-bikes.

Officers allege the 19-year-old was seen riding an illegal e-bike down Elizabeth Street in the city centre before police flagged him down.

He then attempted to flee on the bike before being arrested, police said.

Bodycam footage shared by Queensland Police shows the man trying to ride away.

He was stopped and detained by an officer on foot shortly after.

A search of his belongings then allegedly uncovered a used pipe.

The man was charged with seven offences including one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle, assault of a police officer, driving an uninsured vehicle and possessing dangerous drugs.

He will face Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 6.

The incident took place during an inner-city patrol in Brisbane to “detect and deter” the use of illegal e-bikes.

E-bikes in Queensland must not have an electric motor which allows speeds in excess of 25km/h.

If it does not meet this requirement, it must qualify and registered as a motorbike.

North Brisbane District Inspector Peta Comadira warned e-bike riders should ensure their devices are compliant before taking them on the roads.

“Some e-bikes exceed speed limits and are classified as motorbikes, meaning they require registration, insurance, and a licence,” Comadira said.

“We encourage owners of these devices to take these rules seriously and be informed about the road classification of their vehicle.

“Officers will continue to run targeted operations to continue to improve safety and compliance.”
