A Macquarie Bank customer has revealed how he almost fell for a ‘creative’ scam that could have cost him a huge amount of money.

After getting a text that seemed to be from his bank’s messaging system about an unauthorised bank transfer, the man had no reason not to believe it was genuine.

‘I thought it was legit because this system was used when we were doing the application of our loan,’ he posted anonymously to Reddit.

Concerned about his money being stolen, he immediately called the number ‘because we have a fairly big offset account with that bank’.

He said the initial automated response led him to think he was actually calling  Macquarie Bank and that a ‘guy with an Aussie accent answered’.

The man was told his account had been accessed in New Zealand using an iPhone 6.

He was asked how many accounts he had with Macquarie Bank and how much money was in each for ‘security purposes’ – but he smelled a rat.

‘In my head I was like “wtf is this, really?”, so I gave random numbers,’ he said.

He said the fact that the fake numbers were not questioned was his ‘first suspicion’.

The person on the other end of the line then went through some security issues, ‘making you feel like they’re going to help you understand how it happened’.

The man was then passed me to what he was told was the ‘fraud division’, where ‘another Aussie guy told me that (the account) was accessed in using an iPhone 8′ – not an iPhone 6, as the first person had said.

That was his ‘second suspicion’.

The supposed member of the ‘fraud division’ mentioned there were a few more irregular charges – which made the man even more sceptical.

The scammer then said he was going to cancel the card but that he needed the first 12 digits of the card to do so.

The man said he wasn’t comfortable with sharing those details over the phone and that he couldn’t see the charges on his computer in front of him.

‘If it’s really compromised, I’ll cancel it on my own,’ the man told the scammers.

But the fraudster on the line insisted he needed to do it on his system to ‘fully authorise’ the cancellation.

‘He even had the gall to ask me what’s the hesitation and that I called them using their hotline,’ the man said.

‘That’s when I told him I’ll review my security settings first then I’ll call you again.’

At this point the man fortunately realised there were too many red flags and he was speaking to scammers.

He felt lucky to have avoided losing any money and decided to share his story as a warning to others.

‘I work in tech and (am) pretty much aware of online security but they still almost got me. These scammers are getting creative,’ he wrote.

‘I am extremely surprised they managed to disguise themselves as Macquarie bank.

‘I already sent an email to their scam division to explain how this happened.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Macquarie Bank for comment.
