A young man, suspected of being involved in Melbourne‘s tobacco war, has been injured in a daylight shooting.

Multiple shots were fired in the street on Pearson Drive in Coolaroo yesterday afternoon.

Local resident Anish Mulmi, who was not the target of the shooting, was inside his home with his young son at the time.

“After seeing all the bullets on the gates and the shed and everything I’m just thinking we were lucky to be not hurt,” Mulmi said.

“That’s normally the spot where he would play, so it was terrible.”

Victoria Police detective acting inspector Andrew Foot said the 22-year-old victim was known to police.

“We believe he was the prime target of this incident,” Foot said.

It is understood the man from Mickelham is involved in the ongoing tobacco wars.

He was standing with two others in the street when the gunmen approached in a dark coloured BMW and opened fire.

He was seen jumping into another car and speeding off after being shot in the hand and leg.

“Even though this is a targeted attack, the fact it has taken place in a public street in the afternoon is simply not acceptable,” Foot said.

Shortly after the shooting, the victim took himself to the Northern Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police say he is not cooperating with their investigation.
