A potentially catastrophic incident unfolded in one of Adelaide’s upscale coastal areas, as a driver allegedly under the influence, exceeding the legal alcohol limit by more than five times, narrowly avoided a serious accident.
The 40-year-old woman from Glengowrie is accused of crashing into two stationary vehicles on Gilbert Road in Somerton Park. The impact caused her car to overturn onto its side late last night, around 10 p.m.
Residents in the vicinity quickly sprang into action, rushing to the scene to assist the driver out of her overturned car.
“We were worried the car might flip over again with her still inside,” said Dmitri Ivanov, a local resident who helped at the scene.
“We were doing our best to stabilize the vehicle, making sure it didn’t tip over any further,” he added.
“We had to break off the roof, the roof window.”
Jasmin Bullus, one of the owners of the damaged vehicles, recounted the immediate aftermath of the rescue.Â
“We got her to the side and I told her to sit down, Chloe got her some blankets and water and stuff,” Bullus said.
The driver underwent a breath test, allegedly registering a reading of 0.262.Â
While no injuries were reported, both parked vehicles sustained significant damage and are likely to be written off.
One of the owners had been sitting in his vehicle only minutes before the collision occurred.
The driver is expected to face charges related to high-range drink driving.
