The prime minister and regional leaders have committed to speeding up the development of a national firearms register, a project initiated in late 2023.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns announced that the state government is considering reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized his administration’s readiness to implement “whatever action is necessary,” hinting at possible reforms to strengthen gun control laws.
“We will explore all possible measures to ensure the safety of our community, including potential legal reforms,” Minns stated to the press on Monday.
“Australians are so proud of their gun laws, and we proved yesterday that we’re not free of these types of massive tragedies.”

There are over four million registered, privately owned firearms in Australia.
“I’m shocked and horrified and so disappointed with where Australia is at today, considering what a fantastic 30 years we’ve had since Port Arthur,” Quinn said.
“Whether somebody should need to have six guns is very debatable,” he said.

Its research shows there are now 800,000 more guns in Australia than after the 1996 gun buyback scheme, which took out 650,000 guns out of circulation.
