American Bluey fans have been left confused after learning what Australians call a very well-known store.

Viewers of the globally popular children’s animation show were sent into a frenzy while re-watching the popular episode TV Shop from the program’s third season.

The episode sees Bluey and Bingo having fun playing with the CCTV cameras at a store called Pharmacy Warehouse.

However, American fans were left confused after hearing Bingo refer to the pharmacy as a ‘chemist’ in what is a very well-known turn of phrase Down Under.

Taking to Facebook, one American asked: ‘Random question for Australian people… are pharmacists commonly referred to as chemists like Bandit was doing in TV Shop?’

Aussies then took to the comments to clarify that ‘chemist’ is a very commonly-used term for a pharmacy as they voiced their disbelief over the confusion.

In fact, the term is so well-known in Australia that one of the leading pharmacy chains in the country is called Chemist Warehouse.

‘Yep get your medicine from the chemist! As well as perfume, jelly beans, makeup and a whole lot more especially from chemist warehouse,’ one user said.

‘Yeah I go to the chemist,’ another commented.

A third clarified: ‘Yes, but either is actually used in Australia and in New Zealand. So you might say ”I need something from the chemist” or something from the pharmacy, both are correct and common.’

‘We have Chemist Warehouse and Priceline Pharmacy so both work,’ another added.

‘Chemist and pharmacy are interchangeable for the most part. I always say I’m going to the chemist, but the person who gives me my meds is a pharmacist,’ a third added.

Another Australian weighed into the debate as they claimed most people call the actual shopfront a chemist, while the medicine counter inside is generally referred to as a pharmacy.

It is not just in Australia that the word chemist is frequently used, as it is also commonly heard in both the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

Though Bluey is an Australian animation show, it has become hugely popular in the United States and has topped its ratings for two years in a row.

The children’s animated series has been riding high in the top ten shows streamed in the US for a massive 112 weeks.

The figures were compiled earlier this month by the Nielsen ratings, which tracks viewership in the US, according to the Comicbook website.

And according to Nielsen’s survey, Bluey has been in the top ten shows streaming in the US since October 2022.

Bluey is broadcast in more than 60 countries, with all three seasons of the Emmy-award-winning cartoon available on ABC iview.

The award-winning animated series first hit screens in 2018 and has since become a favourite for kids and parents.

Last month, BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company announced they are bringing Bluey’s first-ever animated feature film to the big screen, which will be written and directed by the show’s creator Joe Brumm.

‘I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,’ Brumm said.

‘I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.’
